Saw the movie last week, found it to be rather boring and predictable, not much in the way of Sci=Fi and too much obvious political bias..
However that orbiting habitate ring made me think what a great movie could be made from Larry Nivens Sci-Fi classic Ringworld

So much great Sci-Fi out there but not much of it gets made into a movie. Theres so much that could be better than Elysium.
How about a trilogy of Arthur C Clarkes Rendez Vous with Rama
A world traveling through space.

Remember they tried to do it with Dune (theater version). Very forgettable IMO.
I didn't see the TV series.
I did see Childhood's End and thought it came off as just OK.

I'll agree on Dune being a flop, i dont know how any one got through reading that disjointed stuff.

Imagine instead a tv show based on David Webers Honore Harrington series?

That's a nice illustration, but it doesn't tell me much since I haven't read sci-fi in several years. I do recall a good novel by Niven but not its title.
I may be mixing up my authors, but one story was about a long space journey to a planet with abandoned infrastructure or something like that. I thought it was Niven.

Rush Limbaugh: Elysium is "a full-fledged anti-capitalist, pro-socialism movie!" - YouTube

In your own words please, what about the movie specifically makes it "liberal propaganda"? Is being anti-oligarchy "liberal" or "socialist"?
Personally, I agree with the underlying premise that plutocracy is evil, so where do you disagree and what ideologically did you find disturbing enough to detract from your enjoyment of the film?
Plutocracy is not more inappropriate than communism. I do not want to use the word evil.

Would you live in a ghetto with "poor people"? Would you let your children live in such a place? Just answer yes or no.
No, not everyone can be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, musician... even if given the opportunity, because we were not born the same.

Even the right wingers never suggest shooting the illegals, as the movie shows.

I believe the capable should work more, and thus earn more. The weak should be given the chances to try, but if they fail, they accept the consequences.

Sometimes we work hard to make sure our children can have a good life, not the kids of some unknown single mom. Yes, humans are selfish.

David Weber is one of my Favorite Sci-Fi Authors, he's written several series , Honor Harrington series is pure Military Sci-fi with lots of space battles with aliens, reading this level of sci-fi you can see where i might find Elysium a bit on the tame side
Honor Harrington series by David Weber

** Right-wingers have killed and would kill any time given the chance. They burned "witches" (nonconformists and anybody the local chiefs didn't like), the KKK did it and would do it again. The mentality of the Elysium overlords exists in the real world, and that mentality is in the corporate world and Republican Party today. You think the desire for power is not being acted upon? Just check the self-admitted Ayn Rand disciples in Congress.
** The plutocratic overlords of Elysium are evil and rule-by-wealth is evil. As I said, you fancy yourself one of them? Anything that leads to autocracy with a subjugated populace is evil.
** If people must work, then there must be plenty of jobs.
** What are the "consequences" you allude to that poor people should "accept"? No reason to be vague here - spit it out.
** Yes, let's have a society based on selfishness - the Ayn Rand RW ideal so that the wealthy "cream" (Romney, Trump, Paris Hilton, the Kochs) rises to the top and controls government.
Seems like you are saying that the earthbound impoverished "illegals" portrayed were indeed getting what they deserve, and the overlords were indeed the "best" people. The RW propaganda we hear today is that such overlords just "work harder" than the peons to get what they want, and therefore are deserving of rule - and you seem to empathize with this idea. If so, it's pretty sad.
