Did you ever count the commercial breaks? Seven. They go on so long and repeat so many times, I forget what I am watching.
"Scary movies that don't rely on surprise, gratuitous sex, and gore." Kinda like the Pee Wee Herman Playhouse without Pee Wee or the playhouse. Seriously?
By surprise, I mean something suddenly jumps out at the person and it scares the audience. By gratuitous sex, I mean movies like Friday the 13th (at least the originals back in the T&A days of the '80s) where it adds nothing to the plot, but it makes it impossible to watch it with your preteen kids. By gore, I mean all movies these days with blood and guts that look so fake and stupid (Final Destination, etc.) or the torture movies like Saw and Hostel.
Blaire Witch was creepy without resorting to any of that. I was just giving a nod to it because I appreciate it much more when the story is scary without relying on the easy plot twists.

Just to clarify, I would never watch Friday the 13th movies with my preteen kids, mainly because of the sex thing AND BECAUSE THEY'RE STUPID. But there are certain movies that are otherwise perfectly fine for the kids to watch except they contain one scene that makes it inappropriate. Jerry McGuire comes to mind when Kelly Preston and Tom Cruise have a short sex scene, but luckily it's near the beginning so I can skip that part for the kids.

At first glance I thought you were saying your kids were stupid!
Caligula... a movie in my opinion that has little redeeming value. I'm not one to vote movies one star because they 'depress' me like some do, but the torture scenes combined with the nudity... I didn't make it much past 30 minutes. Not my cup of tea... definitely not.

Agree with the Human Centipede 2 comment. Disgusting and I only watched a bit of it to see what the fuss was about.
The last movie that really turned me off was The Heat for some reason. I love both actresses but the movie was not funny. Even worse, I gave into whining by my teen to buy it at the supermarket and I did. We normally are careful with the R rated titles with the kids. My rather uptight hubby watched it with us and it seemed like every word out of McCarthey's mouth was a cuss word. Normally not prudish but I started cringing at every profanity because he was getting madder and madder. Couldn't get through the whole thing and it ended up in our trash can. Wouldn't have been as bad watching it by myself but with the family...............awkward!!! lol
