I started a thread about "Sunshine Cleaning" and in it I commented about Alan Arkin who is still working, hard, at 76. The first thing I remember him in was "The Russians Are Coming...." right after I graduated high school.
I went over to imdb and reveiwed his career to see how much of his big screen work I had seen, A LOT. In the beginning of his career he had a few great roles but it was 13 years between "The Russians Are Coming..." and "The In-Laws", but in between he had some great roles; "The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter", "The 7 Percent Solution", "Popi" and "Catch-22".
But from "The In-Laws" ('79) and "Edward Scissorhands" ('90) I didn't recognize the titles of any of his work, and never saw any of the TV shows he was on. The in the '90s he did "Glenngarry Glenn Ross", "The Rocketeer", "Grosse Pointe Blank", "Gattacca" and "Slums Of Beverly Hills". Then he seems to have disappeared again until "Little Miss Sunshine".
Granted "Slums", "LMS" and "Sunshine Cleaning" have him playing the same role, but he still makes me laugh as much now as he did in "The Russians Are Coming...".
BTW, 3 Oscar nominations, "The Russians Are Coming...", "Catch-22" and "Little Miss Sunshine", (won).
One of the funniest men in hollywood.I like the 1974 film Freebie and the Bean with Arkin and James Caan.Valarie Harper was very good as beans wife.Very non politically correct, thats why I liked it.
Alan has been around forever!! Always nice to see him turning up in a movie. Even forgettable stuff like 'Grudge Match.' He is always better than the material. My favourite movie of his is 'Catch 22.'
I recall as a kid watching him as the original Inspector Clouseau. He was quite funny. I think Kevin Kline was channeling him in French Kiss.
