"...attention whores"? Don't offend their macho sensibilities. I got over liking loud pipes the first time I took a long trip with them on my bike. I got tired of hearing them, let alone other people!
If some one is thinking that loud pipes are going to save lives tell that to Granny Goodwitch who pulls a left turn as you are going through the intersection or the Moose/deer/dog jumps out in front of you. Best way to save your life is wearing proper safety gear and driving defensively..
I don't know if load pipes save lives, but they do help prevent accidents. Most accidents->90%- happen in town and involve a car. There have been many times I've been in town and heard a bike but was unable to see where it was, but, I knew it was there and started looking for it untill I found it. I have two Harleys, one with drag pipes and another with mufflers...........I've had more close calls on the one with mufflers vs. the other, and not because the muffled one gets ridden more. By the way, helmets and proper gear save lives.
I am for loud pipes and more so for full helmets. I like the pipes a little louder than stock in most cases because I have noticed it gets the attention of even those on their cell.
On a long, highway trip, a quiet to moderate pipe makes more sense though.
Helmet is a must regardless of the State law and whether I have a loud pipe or not because loud pipe doesn't eliminate the possibility of me and/or the bike going down for whatever reasons.

I don't mind pipes a little louder than stock either. It's the ones which are much louder than stock to which I object. (Of course, the preceding may depend upon just how loud 'stock' is!)

Let me pull up next to you at a stop light, with my blown mountain motor, headers and no mufflers, and see how you like it. (hyperbole for those impaired, but easily done).

Though it annoys the rest of us in the ED, as wearing a helmet cuts down on the supply of harvestable parts, and is an attempt to thwart Darwinism.
I these "Loud pipes save lives" bikers want to be taken seriuosly they would also advocate flouresent "biker gear" which would enhance safety by adding a visual element to "being noticed".
My take on "loud pipes" is that these people are attention whores......
I have a stock muffler on all my bikes but I wouldn't mind having something louder. I also wear the day-glo green and a full face every time I ride. Why shouldn't I do everything possible to be safe?

I was driving in my box van one night and some guy rode next to my rear wheel. I couldn't see his headlight in the side mirror, I couldn't see his headlight on the ground, and there are no rear side windows. I could hear him though. One could argue that he shouldn't be riding there but he was, and his pipes saved him.
I have no issues with people deciding not to wear helmets, it should be a choice. However, if you chose not to wear a helmet it should be mandatory that you are an organ donor. No if, ans or buts about it.
This seems very logical to me it gives people the right to chose and it assists those waiting for organs perhaps a shorter wait. It seems ridiculous to me letting all those good organs go to waste.
See how easy that was everyone is a happy camper.

Reason: add sentence

I understand your logic - but your bolded quote above covers the issue quite well. The guy shouldn't have been riding there - IMO, its not subject to argument. He was riding improperly.

You're certainly right about that. If a rider must depend upon his loud pipes to save him, he probably won't last long. My first rule of riding in traffic is to assume that no one sees me, since I can't be sure which people do.
