Parts of Philly (South St, Society Hill) felt similar to parts of Montreal, definitely not the city as a whole. I for one don't really get the Boston comparison.

Montrealers put a lot of emphasis on artistic pursuits of all kinds, and view it as something people with any sort of a day job might get involved in. There are a lot of people there with a weekend band, or who paint on the weekends, who take music lessons, etc. More so than in traditional anglo-saxon places, where I guess in order to be interested in the arts, the assumption seems to be you need to be a full time artist. Montrealers aren't embarrassed to be seen reading a book about an intellectual topic. But at the same time, it's a laid-back place. You most likely wouldn't have to be ashamed of wearing jeans, or having a blue-collar job, or drinking a beer instead of a rosé.
They go out and socialize more in general, so spending the evening at a cafe, or a wine bar, or a show, or a dinner party -- that's more of the rhythm of life there. It makes the city more alive than some cities where everyone seems to be about the career, and people just kind of go back and forth between the office and the suburbs like zombies.
Not really, no, it's closer to New England than any other part of the U.S. I could think of. New Orleans has a French Canadian connection through the Cajuns, but Cajun culture and Quebecois culture are really different from each other.
