Spearfish holds the world record for the fastest temperature change. On January 22, 1943 at about 7:30 a.m. MST, the temperature in Spearfish was -4° degrees F. The chinook wind picked up speed rapidly, and two minutes later (7:32 a.m.) the temperature was +45°F above zero. The 49-degree rise in two minutes set a world record that still holds. By 9:00 a.m., the temperature had risen to 54°F. Suddenly, the chinook died down and the temperature tumbled back to -4°F The 58-degree drop took only 27 minutes.

One time it snowed 5-6ft. in one snowstorm down the road in Deadwood/Lead. Another time Deadwood/Lead got a foot of hail. They actually got the snowplows out to remove it from the road.
In the case of Minnesota I don't think it's a matter of extremes - it's more a matter of prolonged periods of horrible weather (especially cold). I would say that in Duluth we have the second worst climate of all small and larger cities in the continental United States (first place goes to Fargo, ND by a small margin). Winters are obviously the worst season, and it's easy to see why: in the entire month of January, we did not once pass 26 degrees F. In Spearfish, on the other hand, spells of extreme cold often occur during the winter, but because of the more changeable nature of your weather, you often get relief in the form of temperatures in the 40's and 50's, and sometimes (not speaking about Spearfish specifically, but Black Hills in general) even 60's and 70's. The highest temperature for Deadwood in January was 57, by the way.

It looks like another week of extremely crappy weather for Duluth...

This is a very good analysis. I lived in Duluth from Summer 08' - Summer 10' and this is exactly what I noticed. It was the extended periods of crappy, intolerable weather. Growing up in the Twin Cities, I was used to the cold, wind and gray that comes with winter, but nothing compared to Duluth. The biggest difference I noticed were the spring and fall seasons. Everyone always used to ask and still asks "Geez, how were the winters up there?" The winters were never really that bad or that much different. Honestly, what's the difference between -12 in MPLS and -18 in Duluth? It's just splitting hairs at that point.

It was the time period from End of March to Mid May and end of Sept to Mid Nov. that were the real differences. In the Twin Cities, the time period of end of March to Mid May is the time where temps increase quickly, snow melts, grass gets green and leaves grow on trees. In the Twin Cities, the time period of end of Sept to Mid Nov. sees the temps slowly change to cooler temps, leaves change toward the middle of Oct, and it rarely snows.

In Duluth, the spring time is non-exsistent (if you can call Duluth summers, summer) It goes from Cold, bitter winds and grays up until about May then the next thing you know it's 'summer'. The Fall is weird too. The 'summer' leaves and then you get about a week of 'fall' and then it's winter.

In short, Duluth's April's and Mays are like the Twin Cities' March and Aprils and Duluth's September and Octobers like the Twin Cities' Octobers and Novembers.
