Looks like we could have a 40+ degree drop on Wednesday. Predicting 32 for a high and -10 for a low Thursday morning.

Yep, we're gonna approach 20 below up here Thursday night into Friday morning.....but then praise the Lord it looks like another immediate warm up for a long stretch headed toward March afterward......and THAT's been the best part about this winter - no prolonged periods of extreme snow or cold. I will take that and SMILE every time.

Schools closed up here today, likely due to a.m. bus stop wind chills. Currently -14 with WC of -26 at my place.

I've only lived in MN 3 years......have they always closed schools for weather like this?

It would have to be much colder than this for schools to close - usually they would close first massive snow. They are allowed just so many weather closings per year and after that they have to make the days up by staying longer at the end of the school year - nobody wants that.

Well they closed them today. I was not happy. The sun was shining and the roads were dry. Ours was one of only a handful to close in the metro region, so I'm not sure why we had to close when so many others didn't. It's supposed to be just as cold tomorrow morning, too with the same wind chills. Kids are already off for Presidents Day on Monday. It just irks me.

The only 3 or 4 snow days I ever had in school here was Halloween blizzard, and in 96 when we set record lows. It may have been buses might not be able to start as a big reason. A winter or two ago when it snowed during day a lot and buses got stuck, etc...and some kids took hours to get home. This event changed everything and they’ll cancel before it ever happens again.

This morning was only slightly less cold with slightly less wind than yesterday. It was still -12 with 25 below wind chill at 7 a.m. up here and yet today our schools were open. So I take that to mean they're NOT worried about kids getting frostbite and being stranded on broken down buses when it's only 12 below with -25 wind chill? Because that was their reasoning they day before.

We just got 4 to 5 inches of snow in about a 2 and a half hour span tonight. Haven’t seen it snow like that since my northern Michigan days. Good thing it was a quick hitter or else we could have been looking at some ghastly accumulation totals.
