Some folks need to take a look at Michigan's history. Talk about a vacation spot, Michigan has been one of the top destinations for over 120 years. Much longer than Florida ever was. Florida was mostly a swamp, with its interior an arid deset, no one wanted it, land was cheap, still is in some spots, and for good reason. Its hot, humid, and twice as many bugs as just about anywhere. Takes a full day to get out of the place by road, and you are still in the deep south.
No, Florida can't hold a candle to Michigan as a close by vacation destination. We need to bring back the old days, when Midwest folks came in huge numbers, from Detroit,Chicago,Cleveland, and all over , to fish, beach, and to get away from the heat of the city.

Yeah...sure Florida is nice, but your gonna pay the price in heat, humidity, traffic, hurricanes and bugs....and so on. Actually my cousin posted a pic on facebook yesterday of her husband who got bit on the face by some type of spider, and it looked like he went 12 rounds with tyson. And I would never want Michigan to be a vacation destination like Florida. I hate traffic, and even worse...traffic with the old folks... more then anything...thats why we have Florida.

It has been interesting reading through this thread. Considering I am a born and bred Michigan native (who is currently stranded in south Louisiana for economic reasons) - I have one comment each for why Michigan trumps Arizona and Florida:

Florida - Hurricanes! (no blizzard is big enough to beat a hurricane)
Arizona - 110 degree temperatures in the summer (Michigan does NOT get cold enough to trump how hot it can get in Arizona).

The last several posts prove that one man's wasteland (and mine too, for that matter) is another man's paradise. One man sees South Park in the wintertime, another sees an opportunity to ski. I fail to see the beauty in Michigan (with the notable exception of the Leelanau Peninsula) and I know I'm not alone, but then again, I think trees only block the view, while others love trees. It all comes down to your personal taste. Some people love forests, others love deserts.

After going downstate to pick up my daughter for Memorial day weekend then taking her back afterwards, I'd say it was certainly not dead up here. One of the busiest Memorial day weekends I've seen in awhile at least on the road.

A story on 9&10 news said we haven't had weather this nice in late May since the early 90s.

I bet most people were out on the water or doing other things outside. I read that it's mostly when the weather is crappy that people tend to shop downtown.
