Can't really help with bank recommendations. I have always been a credit union type person. I like the generally lower fees and smaller feel to credit unions, plus now that most of them are part of a ATM group I don't pay fees at most other credit unions around the state.

Congrats Mom!

How was the drive? Me and mine are leaving the Inland Empire of SoCal on the 20th taking the same route you described. If this keeps up we'll completely counteract any negative migration from MI just out of Southern California!

I spent most of the summer in the Inland Empire (Rancho) working. It was hot hot hot and smoggy. I am so glad to be back home in Michigan for a while. It is beautiful here right now.

Get ready for winter. The winter is really long. You have to learn to embrace winter and look forward to it, otherwise you spend half of you life just getting through to spring. That is no way to live. Fall is phenomenal. The best time to be here. You also need lots of clothing. (Go to off season sales at K-mart and Meijers and to salvation Army stores, especially if you have kids who will outgrow their clothing in one season) You will be amazed at ho much clothing you end up needing.

Thanks Coldjensens. We are going into this with excitement towards having actual seasons and Winter in particular. We've all been in SoCal our whole lives. Back when my wife and I were young, it was a great place to live. No longer! We want small towns, weather, nice people etc. As far as clothes, we hope we are mentally prepared, if not we will adjust!

Mkfarnam, I know SanBerdoo well! We are in Fontana now but my wife grew up in Highland and I in Riverside.

I worked on Baseline RD in Highland.

Fontana.........the home of the "California Speedway", the new extention of the I-210 freeway from Upland to I-30.
The Mayor sure changed the looks of Fontana.
Actually I lived closer to Rialto (Muscoy) off of old Highland Ave. and on a main drag upto the mountains. near UCSB.

I thought this was pretty good news:

WKZO NEWS: A "MEGA" Morning in Michigan (http://wkzonews.blogspot.com/2008/08/mega-morning-in-michigan.html - broken link)

Especially since the first two companies are hiring "white collar" workers.

Here's a picture today from the "Medical Mile" building boom in downtown Grand Rapids. That's not even all of it. Just out of view to the left is a 240,000 sf addition to the Van Andel Institute.
