Been on it hundreds and hundreds of times over the course of my lifetime, at every single hour of the day/night as well.

I've driven over it, walked across it and taken a boat ride underneath it.

Yep. I haven't been on it at 2:00 am, though.

I grew up in Alpena, but one set of grandparents lived in the UP, so I've seen the bridge many, many times. I still think it's one of the most beautiful bridges in the world.

Got to go for the quad-fecta: snowmobile under it!

My mom used to tell me stories of snowmobiling out to Mackinaw Island.

Speaking of Yugos, the only car to accidentally plummet from the Mackinac Bridge was a 1987 Yugo. It was driven by Leslie Ann Pluhar who met her fate on September 22, 1989, ostensibly from a combination of high winds and speed. The gruesome accident captivated the media as recovery efforts, and speculation as to identification of the victim(s), continued for several days. She was only 31 years old. Her car had crashed over the guardrails and fell 170 feet into the cold waters below. Autopsy results indicated that she sustained serious injuries but drowned as her car sank another 150 feet, landing on a shelf near the bottom of the straits. You can't help but to think of that horror as you cross the bridge.

By chance, I went over the bridge a short time thereafter. My friend was driving his small Ford Pinto with a canoe strapped to the roof. A high wind advisory was in effect, with 50 - 55 mile per hour winds, but the bridge remained open to traffic. The canoe acted as a sail and the winds rocked our car as I continually implored my friend to slow down. I usually enjoy the view--but I was glad to get off the bridge that day.

Many millions of people have driven over the bridge and only the Yugo has accidentally gone over the railings. (One other car went over in an apparent suicide.)

But, on another note, how many people remember taking the ferries that preceded the bridge?

I've heard of the Yugo being blown off...what a horrible way to go.
