Don't they close it for high winds?

I know they have in the past. I read somewhere the winds were up to 60 mph, wonder why they didn't close last night?

Wow--that had to have been scary.

Years ago, shortly after the girl went over the railing of the Mackinac bridge in her Yugo, I was crossing the bridge during a high-wind advisory. They had signs posted and the winds were 45-50 mph. We had a small Pinto with a canoe strapped to the roof. The canoe acted as a sail and each wind gust literally rocked the car. I can't tell you how many times I told my friend to slow down. Boy, was I ever relieved to get off the bridge that day!

Looks like they only close it if the winds go over 65mph (or 50mph for trucks). That's a lot!

I remember that incident very well to this day. I think the woman's name was Leslie Pluhar (sp)?. I'd have to look it up online to be sure. Just looking at this photo makes me dizzy. I'm not good with heights so I'd probably have passed out from fear if I had been this driver.

Yes, that was her name. (I, too, remembered that her last name was Pluhar, had to confirm her first name.) The date was Sept. 22, 1989 and she was from Royal Oak.

That incident just stayed in my mind all these years. I guess the very thought of such a horrible death made an impression.
