Note to the original post. DO NOT gauge this as a typical MI winter. This was one of the mildest most snow-free winters the midwest and northeast has seen in a long time.

Northern MI, however, has had some DEEP snow to play in this week. Few pics from Grayling this past weekend. As I posted in another thread, the snow was 30" deep and picturesque. Its amazing the difference a winter can make. Last winter, they never had snowdepth higher than a foot, while we in SE MI were pushing a foot-and-a-half in depth in February. This winter, our highest depth has been 5" here while they are at two-and-a-half feet!!!

FOR COMPARISON....here is the deepest our snow has been this winter versus last in SE MI

Feb 11, 2012...deepest snow of 2011-12 winter

Feb 6, 2011, deepest snow of 2010-11 winter

Beautiful pictures indeed. Where I live, throughout this entire winter season, we didn't see anything near that amount of snow. I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed this winter season. I am afraid of what next year will bring however.

It's not too bad unless it's a neighborhood full of seniors and/or disabled folks. But here's always enough youngins in an area that go around after a snow storm and ask if they can shovel your pathways (for a nominal fee, of course).

The bigger problem is ICE. That's a definite pain in the butt to get rid of because apparently if it's too cold (like under 20-15 degrees or something), salt won't have any effect. So then you have to scrape at it for forever and a day or else someone's going to slip and fall. And in sue-happy America, we definitely want to avoid that.

there is stuff that will melt ice down to ridiculous temps. Peladow will melt it down to -25, and most of it is made right here in MI at the OxyChem plant in Ludington.

For here you have to go back to 05-06 for a season with less snow here. Ofcourse as you know this is one of the few areas in the region to get even close to climo snowfall ( 50 vs normal of around 61 ) but ala because of the warmth not many even realize it snowed that much. Back in 76-77 just about the same amount of snow fell here but it was seen as alot worse because of how cold it was which allowed the snow to keep piling up ( vs melting ) and so it got pretty deep and stayed on the ground the whole winter into Mid march.

But yeah this has been a exceptional winter for these parts with all the warmth etc. Probably won't be another like it for a good while.
