We are relocating to Florida from Boise Idaho. My husbands job transferred him to Medley. We have an 11 year-old daughter that is reluctant to move and are looking for an area to rent that is nice, quiet, and have great schools that are not over crowded. Remember we come from Boise, Idaho that has a pace of a snail. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for a home to rent no more than $1,100 per month with a safe environment, not much of a commute to Medley for my husband, and good schools?

Miami Springs and Miami Lakes are close to Medley and are great Miami-Dade municipalities.

Dade schools would be TERRIBLE for a kid from IDAHO who doesn't even want to move in the first place.

Hi Ddahl, be prepared for a MAJOR culture shock if you settle in that area. For example, Miami Lakes Middle School is 6% white (source).

To ease the culture shock on your daughter (and you), look to Broward county (Sunrise, Weston, etc).

You will not find a house in a safe area with good schools and within short commuting distance of Medley for 1,100. Up your budget to around 1,500 for starters and look into Miami Springs or Virginia Gardens. Schools won't be great but they aren't bad either.

If you can afford it, try Coral Gables or Miami Lakes. The schools aren't great there either...and all of these areas are over crowded. It just comes with the territory so you may as well live in the nicest area you can afford with the nicest amenities...and that will keep you out of bad areas. Doral wouldn't be a bad option either.

It will be massive culture shock. Start preparing your daughter now...

You might want to stick with Tampa as housing costs would be cheaper, however schools are analogous to Dade.

I'm not sure how you can prepare for that massive a culture shock coming from idaho. i would definitely start in weston or sunrise or something and commute. might be a drive but the alternative is getting locked into a year lease and misery.

I spent a few days in Boise this summer and really enjoyed my visit. Even though Boise is far away from other major cities, I thought it was nice and not congested at all.

If you have been living in Boise for a long time be prepared for a shock in culture, traffic, and overall pace in the Miami metro area. I agree with a previous poster, consider moving to a less congested part of town 1st as you may go through a few weeks, months, or more of transistional period moving to this area.

Any place in Dade is going to be a horrible change for an 11 year old girl from Boise, Idaho. For your daughter's sake, live in West Broward and have your husband commute to Medley.

FWIW, Miami Lakes has two highly rated K-8 centers. If you lived in either of their attendance zones, your daughter would not have to attend ML Middle. However, she would still be immersed in a Hispanic environment - really can't avoid that in Dade.
