I would suspect a boarding school to be something of a militant police state which youth suffer the oppression of a dictatorial administration vs the public school which is just lawless.

Of the two, I'd probably prefer the dictatorship for the long term. A bit of wild is fun for a while, but that gets old fast.
I was considering boarding school for my kids, but now I understand what you mean.

How about Home-schooling and private tutoring (with real professors, of course)?

Public schools are out of the question for me; though times are changing and kids are becoming more open minded, reserved, and less aggressive nowadays - all thanks to the internet and the ever growing Shut-In phenomena.

The students are actually the lesser evil when it comes to school angst. I'm more concerned about the teachers who take their misery and insecurities on the children.

Wow where did you all go to school? I enjoyed my school years in public schools as did all my friends and relatives, including my teenage nephews. And it wasn't the constant partying, which in my case was nonexistant. It was just the learning experiences, the companionship of your peers, etc.

When I think of boarding school, I think of places like Andover where the Bushs send their brats. In the end I think it just becomes a higher level of pecking order struggle.

Seems like any group of 10 close friends could pool their money and hire a teacher to oversee their kids' internet based curriculum. The kids could do most of it themselves and just get some help when needed. Or maybe webcam math teacher who answers question and gives lectures for a monthly subscription. Sorta like a porn site, only a lot more boring.

It's all Cixells fault. No seriously, I've been very busy. I read the board sometimes, same thing over and over

I heard Dallas is hot as hell these days. Must be crazy there.
Mostly just hot my dear. It's too hot for people to be crazy. We just stay inside and hope it will end before October.

Maybe I'll down to Miami for a cool-off.

How will they ever have 10 close friends if you want to shelter them from the world?!

I'm replying to to this thread after reading some xenophobic and slight racist/culturally insensitive statements. Life is what you make of it and I would suggest that you immerse yourself in the local culture, have your child learn Spanish (she will be smarter and more competitive later on), and enjoy the experience. Learn as much as you can and leave out what you dislike.

That being said, I am going to be brutally honest.

South Florida is a racially and culturally segregated society. You will find that the majority of professional nonhispanic whites either commute from Broward or live in enclaves such as Coral Gables, Hammocks, Cutler Ridge and some outlying areas of Miami Shores, and Kendall, for the most part.

If you're working-class, then more than likely you will end up in Davie, Cooper City, and parts of Plantation.

Weston is expensive. You will not find a house in Weston for less than 400k. You may find a condo, or a foreclosure for less.

West Plantation is a similar story, although there is a more diverse housing market there.

Private school is a good option if you've got the resources (16K plus for tuition).

Best private schools are around the Coral Gables and South Miami area. Plantation has the Heritage School which is top-notch prep academy (they hire faculty form state colleges to manage their advance placement programs). One of my colleagues was a history professor and he taught there while also teaching at Barry University, and FIU. Most graduates place high and end up at the ivies.

I would avoid the beaches. The beaches are not family friendly and comes with its own culture shock too: Gays and Jews/Israelis, Russian, and rich South Americans. If you're a 'family values' person then you will undoubtedly avoid the beaches...

You have a lot of research to do and think about if you're going to move to S. FL. Perhaps as some other members have suggested, the West Pembroke Pines, Miramar area is more of a good fit for you and your family, but if you're looking to escape the culture clash (stay in a lilly white environment), unless you have a huge budget to segregate yourself in an enclave and send your child to private school, then that is going to be nearly impossible to do.

PS. I went to school in Miami Lakes and I did just fine...if you choose Miami Lakes your child will either end up in Goleman or Hialeah Miami Lakes. Goleman is a better option. The school board busses students from Carol City to desegregate Hialeah Miami Lakes. Your child will go to school in a very 'urban' environment there.

That's true for every public school in Miami. Even the so called good public schools have low income students(except of course Magnet schools). What makes the difference is the percentage. When you are outnumbered, you tend to act differently.

I don't know about Miami Lakes, but I would think the Hialeah crowd would "urbanize" it more than the Carol City students.

To an extent (mostly because of the low income apartments in the area) but the really urban Hialeah crowd tends to be funneled to Hialeah High and Westland High...

Full disclosure: I went to HML (graduated in 2004). Nothing more terrifying than seeing the busses with the kids from Carol City arrive. They would instigate fights during lunch constantly, sell all sorts of drugs... one time, I even saw a female student with a location monitor leg strap... she wasn't even 16 yet... (Thank GOD for the AP program). That's the only saving grace of public schools... the gifted/advance placement program. The school within a school concept is a ****ty one but it works for some, it did for me. Those kids form Carol City would have eaten me up if I had been in class with them or had the same lunch times...

I will say it again... life is what you make of it. If your child is bright, smart, and intelligent, they will not have to deal with the riff-raff...
