We had about six inches of snow and I had to think about how even a little snow would keep these cars off the road. They are light and underpowered and have low ground clearance. I see two in my area almost weekly and always have a good laugh when I see the ladies driving them.
I can fit 4 adults (somewhat comfortably) in mine, and still get 48-50mpg @70-75mph... if the Smart doesn't get anywhere near that ...it isn't so smart.
There were a couple Smart cars on display at the mall over the Christmas holiday, and the mpg rating was 37. It's only a 2 seater. At over $19,000 I just can't see where it's worth the money when you can get a Hyundai Elantra 4 door that gets 35 mpg for $14,000 or your choice of several other cars at this price and mpg range.

The main benefit of the Cobalt XFE is derived from its engine. The recent Cobalt sold at the market has an improved fuel rating of 9%. This enables the vehicle to provide an m.p.g of 26 for city driving conditions and 36 for highway driving conditions and a MSRP: Starting at $14,990 and it looks alot beeter than the smart IMO

As ugly as they are, these cars make a great deal of sense in dense cities like San Francisco. I was driving around for 15+ minutes trying to find parking in lower downtown SF some time back and saw one of these smart cars fill a tiny parallel parking spot by parking perpendicular to the curb. The short length still made it a good fit and the car wasn't sticking out any more than a parallel parked truck or SUV. I'd kill to have a small car like that just for city driving.
