Default Make a tinfoil hat for your smart key

Why do we want "smart keys" and the like anyway? Is it really that hard to put a normal key in the door/ignition?

The auto industry comes up with these ideas to prevent theft, but in the end, theft is still easily achieved and it just costs car owners more money (to buy and maintain).

They aren't made to repel theft entirely, but to make it less attainable to the common car thief, and the common car thief don't have the brains or skill to hack your keys. Swiss researchers are not who usually steal cars.

A professional car thief gets your car anyway (usually far easier, at gunpoint), but it stops the most common ones.

Eventually, one automaker is going to tap into the minimalist market and build a car with nothing more than a stereo, power windows and power locks. They'll rake in the $$$ too.

Well there's the Tata, that one's pretty minimalistic, and they produced the original Golf in south africa up until 09-10.

There are indeed some who prefer their vehicles to be pretty basic, but most people don't. The majority of the market spec their cars up rather than buy base models, I think that tells the car companies something about priorities.

There are TWO types of keyless entry & start systems:
  1. Active Keyless Entry & Start (AKES), where the button on the key must be pressed to unlock the door and the key must be inserted into the ignition to start the engine; and
  2. Passive Keyless Entry & Start (PKES), where the key only has to be in the vicinity of the car to unlock the door and ignition.
The theft system discussed in the article ONLY works against PKES.

It gives new meanings to the mnemonics KOEO and KOER. (KEY OUT, ENGINE OFF or RUNNING)
