Snow fleas are perfectly harmless to people and pets. I've never seen them show any interest in humankind.
Black flies will be out soon and that is a different matter.

Default Help Id'ing bugs

Unless your containers are air tight toss everything you stored outside in the snow. These bugs do sound like a bunch of blackflies who have decided to hatch. I lived in Northern Maine for 12 years and it will be blackfly mania in about a month up there so these could very well be blackflies. If in fact these bugs are not blackflies, which I doubt, then you still could get sick from what you stored out in the snow. Time to buy a new fridge...a bigger one!

Just put a cover on the bucket until you get there.

I agree with BTFM. Here the sea smoke is easier to get than the steam, so that's what we use.

Use your wet/dry shop vac and after sucking them up toss some poison into the container.

I have found to get rid of fruit flies in the house, I use a vacuum cleaner and suck then out of the air. Then wait 15-30min later go back and repeat till no more fruit flies.
