You have deer ticks and lyme disease in Delaware, too?

There has been at least one nest of fire ants in Eastport. We know this because it was in our back yard and our dog sat down on it.

There used to be a website called eastportme.info that said that there were almost no black flies or mosquitoes on Moose Island, so please don't bring any with you when you cross the causeways.

When I worked in the USDA Forestry Service office I learned that there were approximately 10,000 spiders per acre in Maine's forests at that time. Funny how things that creep you out stick with you for 24 years.

We have all of the above mentioned bugs and mosquitoes and noseeums too. There are a lot more bugs but those seem to be the ones that bug us most.

Have to do it, Bob. My last trip out Shackford Head in Eastport:

Actually according to UMO research, that is part of one large colony that covers most of the island. We do get some blackfly and mosquito here but generally not too bad, except on Carlow's Island and Shackford Head. In our neck of the woods, mensa, they are pretty well non-existent.

There will probably be a few more mosquitoes on Moose Island this year becuase of all the rain, but nothing like you'd find near the Delaware Bay. I haven't seen a blackfly in Eastport since I've been here, but the red ants are a bit of a problem, especially right after you roto-till your backyard.
