I doubt you will be majorly bothered by black flies. They are more of a problem in heavily wooded and damp areas. Coastal breezes by the ocean should keep the mosquitoes at bay. The only time I was really bothered by black flies was when we lived in a very rural woodsy area or when we tented in the woods at Lily Bay State Park and there was no breeze. Don't let those stories you hear scare you away. You will enjoy Damariscotta. Where are you moving here from?

What Newdawwn said. And even with the mosquitoes, they're really only a nuisance in late spring and very early summer.

The farther south you go, the more bugs.

We lived in Damariscotta for several years. If you're in town, no worries about bugs generally speaking. If you're in the countryside, black flies might be a problem early in the season, and mosquitoes will come out at dusk. Nothing like the bugs in other coastal towns, such as Woolwich, that have salt marsh mosquitoes. Those buggers will pick you up and carry you off to feed their young! Get some Ben's and you'll be fine.

Are these "salt marsh" mosquitos the same type as are found around Winterport/Frankfort on the shore areas? During our last visit there, as soon as we got out of the car to check out the river, we were instantly attacked. They seemed pretty gnarly.

No series problem with black flies where I live. I hear tell that the European Fire Ants are on their way to Canada, though, and they can be impossible to deal with.

Could be. Salt marsh mosquitoes are voracious and determined. Parts of Woolwich are virtually uninhabitable outdoors during the summer because of them. Back in the old days, towns would spray marshland with oil or DDT to kill mosquitoes and the rivers were too polluted to support black flies. The Clean Water Act ended all that (thankfully), and the bugs have thrived ever since.

Everything is a trade off, I guess.
