Went and checked out the local lake today, It looked thick, was already a buncha of holes drilled on it, however I was weary of walking in areas further than waist deep. Thankfully I canoe n fish this lake in the summer, so I know the depths.

edit: I should mention I dont yet own an ice auger, or I would just checked myself. The existing holes someone else drilled were already refrozen completely.
I'm not sure about Maine itself but I have some links that show coverage for the Great Lakes and other locations. Problem is to show thickness one actually physically observe it and I don't know of any sources that get paid to have observers of lake thickness. Although that would be pretty damn awesome.

And to have an average that would mean there would need to be records of it in the past.

I do believe Satellites can capture thickness too. Not sure of any links on that for Maine.

Have you tried a search for it? Post back if anyone finds anything.

I'm always amazed how fast waters can ice up especially not fast moving.

next week we'll get some more thickness.

IMO... given the record warm December we had I have to say we are all below average this year for Ice thickness

BTW Mainers... Wednesday could be your next moderate snow producer.?

And if you watch the Seattle Seahawks vs Minnesota Vikings you will see people sitting in the stadium battling temperatures that struggle past ..................... 0°F. Speaking of ice... good reminders. Interesting that 4" of new ice is stronger then a foot of old part thawed ice.

Maine Warden Service: Specialty Teams: Safety Information Tips

General Ice Thickness Guidelines - For New, Clear Ice Only:

2" or less - STAY OFF
4" May allow Ice fishing or other activities on foot
5" often allows for Snowmobile or ATV travel
8" - 12" of good ice with supports most Cars or small pickups
12" - 15" will likely hold a Medium sized truck.

Remember that these thicknesses are merely guidelines for new, clear, solid ice. Many factors other than thickness can cause ice to be unsafe.

New ice is usually stronger than old ice. Four inches of clear, newly formed ice may support one person on foot, while a foot or more of old, partially thawed ice may not.

Ice seldom freezes uniformly. It may be a foot thick in one location and only an inch or two just a few feet away

Its gonna be dinky. Anything less than 6 inches isn't really a snowstorm for Mainers. However, there is talk of a potential major storm for the next Friday to Monday---15-18th.

A lil off subject, but I heard a story about parties on frozen lakes in Maine, including beer trucks on the ice. Bull or true?

Clever answer.

My fault for using the word party..I was talking more along the lines of winter event type gatherings. Or whatever would call for beer trucks.

Anyway. Who cares. This threat made me think of a story I was told. Wondered of it was true.

Do folks downstate have any snow on the ground? Our snowpack is great today (went sliding), but the rain tomorrow might put a dent in it.

What little rain we get may not affect the snow very much. What we have on the ground is powder and it can absorb quite a bit of 32 degree rain before there is any runoff. I don't expect the inch of rain that we were warned about a few days ago.
