Harbor Freight has a very good inverter on sale. Nearest store to me is in Bangor. Prices are the same coast to coast. They have a 750 watt for $41.99 and a 1,000 watt heavy duty for $84.99. The heavy duty units have USB ports.

i use an inverter hooked to a battery, for a sump pump back up, we lost power for 16 hours a couple weeks ago. it came in handy

its a deep cycle marine battery, does well with 1/3 hp pumps but not 1/2 hp...

id go with the 1000 watt invertor with usb ports...

So, checked out the 1000 watt invertor with usb ports at Harbor Freight in Bangor, ME, and after reading the instructions inside, discovered it does NOT cover computers nor would it be appropriate for my husband's C-PAP Machine....Will check out the one by Amazon! I know this can be done..Out in the camps of Maine I know someone has found a proper inverter to be able to charge their laptops and C-pap!
Will let you know what I find and still continue to appreciate your suggestions!

We just had an 8 hour power outage from that strong dry front that came through. Big trees came down in many towns from Island Falls down to Hampden.

Got back to North Carolina home last night, 55 degrees with melting snow. 3500 feet, go figure.

I *think*, if you were to put something like an APC UPS between the inverter and the electronics it might work OK, although there would be some inefficiency due to the extra component. That said, I have often run a laptop off an inverter in my truck when wardriving or leeching.

The preparedness community strongly prefers Xantex and Outback inverters. One of my inverters is a cheap unit that will not tolerate a variable speed device. It will run a constant speed electric drill, but not a variable speed drill. If you forget your charge cord for a computer, cel phone or iPad, you can stop at many gas stations and get one as cheaply at $4.95. When you plug it into the wall, what come out of the USB port may not be a sine wave signal at 5 volts. Gas station, or ebay, if you value your device, proceed with caution.

We use a 'Midnite Solar Classic' Charge Controller #150, [MPPT-type, 150VDC, 83A@48V],
a 'Magnum Energy' Inverter, [120/240volt, 4400watt, pure sinewave inverter],
and a 48VDC / 600AH battery bank.

Helping to kidnap this thread back on the weather verses invertors, I am starting to wonder if we will even get to use our snow blower this winter... Sure isn't looking like it....
