I certainly hope a Northwoods Park isn't accepted in Maine by the Park Service. I am a member of the National Parks consevation association and have received countless mailings on what they are doing with out ($$$) and how they need donations. How in the world would they be able to sustain "another" National Park. Just makes little sence to me.

Who Owns Maine's Forest?

"The public owns roughly 6% (1,000,000 acres) of Maine forestland. Of that, the state of Maine owns Baxter State Park (235,000 acres), 55 State Wildlife Management Areas, 29 Public Reserve Lands (482,000 acres), and 32 State Parks (from 500 to 43,000 acres in size). In total, the state owns more than 800,000 acres of public land. The federal government owns the other 200,000 acres of forest, including the part of the White Mountain National Forest located in western Maine, Acadia National Park, and five National Wildlife Refuges scattered across the state."

Interesting, if you go to the national park service website and click on acadia, you get redirected to this page because of the government shutdown...

Well today about 10am 14 people on 4 wheelers and one UTV went all the way up Cadillac mountain. Called channel 5 but they never showed up. Or so I was told anyway...

Thanks for the link.
We drove by them on the way to Quaker Meeting in Northeast Harbor on Sunday, last October 19, 2012. We had to keep reminding ourselves that they were in a race and didn't want to be "picked up in the car." Some of them looked very miserable, running with plastic trash bags that people had apparently given them. I'm betting they will have the right gear the next time the have to possibly run in the rain.

A couple of decades ago there was a group called "The Toppers". They rode snowmobiles up to mountain peaks in Maine and NH. Some of their snowmobiles had winches on them. Photos were taken atop the mountains with the riders wearing hats and masks. The forest cops take a dim view of such adventures.

I hope that you meant they went up the closed car road and not up the trails. That would be difficult even in a motor cycle. I have friends who've been on the park roads even the one up Cadillac, in bicycles since the park closed. Its really only closed to cars and buses.

BTW Maine is a poorer state; there is nothing whining about it. Compared to Maryland or Virginia or Pennsylvania, it is poor. Its listed as #33 in the poverty status; #32 by household income. While not at the bottom with Mississippi, we are certainly in the lower half. 63% of the states are richer than Maine.

Its a fact, not a whine.
Fortunately the Cost-Of-Living in Maine is such that allows for so many low-income families to still thrive and be prosperous.

Yes on the road. I "hear" a bottle of champagne was opened and shared by the group of freedom loving owners of the park.

"Its really only closed to cars and buses."

In Florida the federal government tried to close the ocean. Hey, you can't make this stuff up.
