Last year at this time we were finding them. This year has been far too cold. As a general rule Mother's Day has been the traditional peak season for fiddleheads in this part of Maine (South coastal). It tends to peak a bit later in your area. You haven't missed it.

It will be about three weeks after the snow is gone in that spot. That varies up to eight weeks from the Saco River to the Allagash.

We usually go picking in our area of York County after the false helebore or skunk cabbage plants are fully open. It's still too early now.

Hi, foodie here...
I am just so curious about trying those fiddleheads I hear you guys talking about all the time! But from what I understand, they taste a bit like asparagus right? I am thinking...Lightly sauteed in olive oil and/or butter, with some garden herbs sprinkled. A crispy Sauvignon Blanc or a dry Muscat wine, and oh la la baby... I'm in Maine heaven!
