The authorities in Finland and Denmark have much more authority to make it happen and had a smaller problem to begin with. As the Guardian article points out, most European countries haven't been able to keep up with their homeless problems the way those two countries have, and in my opinion solving the problem in California would be hardest of all.

What's funny about this is Finland has a similar homeless rate as much of the United States, including Texas.

California just doesn't build anything

Now, before I get to ripping this one, let me say, up front: sure, there’s corruption and fraud aplenty in the homelessness management and services circus. There’s also a LOT of assistance being doled out (as evidenced by a less than 12 month houseless status before return to housing by roughly 75% of the homeless).

So, stories like this one featured here in this youtube always catch my attention and beg for a bit of research.

Here’s what you are missing in context:
The ‘show’ featuring this hit piece, “California Insider”, is nothing more than a propaganda front for the Epoch Times.

The Epoch Times is a far right extremist venture with a political and social mission.

The featured *journalist* being interviewed, named Jerry Sullivan, is presented as a “30 year veteran journalist” … yet, the only journalist named Jerry Sullivan who pops up on the internet search I just tried, is a different guy who works for a tv station in Buffalo, NY.

Now, anyone can call themselves a journalist without having credentials and resume. It’s not illegal. So I’m not saying he isn’t one. Merely pointing out that the interviewee (Jerry Sullivan if that is in fact his name) is apparently a nobody in the world of journalism.

And, furthermore, the hosting media is a far-right ideology platform with a mission.

Huh.

On to your next Youtube expose’, eh?

Money goes in, lots of taxpayer money, and it disappears into the black hole of the government.

The problem is too big for the state government to solve. You can argue about where the money is going, but vast amounts of money have been poured into the problem in California and the number of homeless is still increasing. Housing first is a good idea but unfortunately despite their best efforts California has not been able to put it into effect. When there's a huge amount of government money floating around, people converge on it and find a way to take the money. A lot of them probably don't genuinely care about the homeless.

True ^^ … that said, though, the question of why so many homeless continue / increase is a socio-economic one. Homelessness is a collateral effect of highly successful economies in highly desirable locales. As fast as services can help many of these folks get off the street (approximately 75% are re-housed in less than 12 months) … a boatload of newly homeless appear.

Housing First programs do exist successfully at various places in CA. But the state is not managing them. They are non-profits existing on various grants, including from government.
