My wife and I will be moving in january of next year from AZ(tired of our dry landlocked state) but now I am torn between Houston TX and L.A. I have been to L.A a few times and love it. I always wanted to move there since I was little but never had the chance, just moved from Baja(Mexico) to AZ 10 years ago. Of course I miss the ocean. Our 2 choices are Houston which we did visit and has many similarities to L.A. Both diverse, both have coasts, hard to get bored, now Houston beats L.A with the cost of living. My wife will be a nurse and I work in tourism. I really dont want to work hard just for rent which I know is high in California. L.A beats Houston since I do know some friends there(struggling a bit) and my family is here in AZ and Baja Mex which are both close. After all this, is L.A really that bad? I was there this weekend and absolutely love it. Will it be impossible to find a place that is not over $1000 and not in Inglewood or a shady area. I did notice L.A doesnt have a strong middle class. It looks either expensive or hood. I appreciate all the feedback and love your city.

LA (the city) doesn't have a strong "white" middle class. there is a huge latin middle class.

Before you take the plunge & relocate, make sure your wife has a firm job offer with health benefits. So many ppl come to SoCal from other depressed areas of the country thinking that there will be more opportunities, but unless you have very specific high-demand skills, or willing to network like crazy, it's going to be a rough ride at least through next yr. FWIW one of my friend's sisters used to be in tourism promoting California/Las Vegas/Arizona packages for Japn clients, but the sour economy has tightened up foreigners' pocketbooks too and she got canned last month

There's tons of outlying suburbs--Fullerton, Northridge, etc., that aren't terribly expensive, but they're not really "LA".

I will be moving from Los Angeles area to Houston in a month or so and I WISH I could stay here but I can't afford it and the jobs are scarce. Best of luck.

Of course I'm biased towards LA, Long Beach in particular. LB is a great city with plenty of diversity, and is only 25 minutes to LA.

Bruce, the climates are way different between Houston and L.A. If you move to Houston, you'll be going from hot and dry to hot and wet. I realize you have other priorities, but L.A. has much nicer weather, if that's a factor for you.

Why are those your two choices? It's a big country.
