I think he is basing it on population factors and how built up the areas have been. The west generally being the more built up denser population portion, the east being the less built up and less dense portion. As the more built up areas further east become the more the dividing line moves.
I would actually break it down to west, central & eastern. West being west of Rt 111, Centreal LI between RT 111 & William Floyd, eastern LI, east of the William Floyd
predictable: when the facts aren't on his side, crooks goes back to his silly and misinformed Nassau bashing (it looks like queens because I say so!), not to mention making uneccesary and incorrect assumptions about my home.
Regardless, flyover country will likely remain "charming" and "affordable" for quite a while. As long as you don't ask for much, it has everything you need!
I know, old thread but I agree with SIB. Don't get me wrong I love Wading River but I could never get the charm and beauty that is Wading River at an affordable price further west. Believe me I looked, for like 6 years actively. I would rather had bought property in Huntington, Oyster Bay or the Locust Valley area but they didn't fit my income. I saw a nice place on the Miller Place/Rocky Point border but it had a RP mailing address and SD so I said no way. Now I'm in Wading River, charming, yes but unfortunately, a distance to most of my needs.

When Sunrise Highway becomes... a highway. So Lindenhurst/Babylon.
I don't know if "Eastern Long Island" and the "East End" would be the same definition. The east end has always been defined as the five eastern towns (Southold, Southampton, Riverhead, East Hampton and Brookhaven) although I know growing up in Southold that we never thought Brookhaven belonged in that group.

You're right, the Town of Brookhaven is not one of the five eastern towns.
Replace Brookhaven with Shelter Island and you've correctly listed the five eastern towns: Southold, Southampton, Riverhead, East Hampton and Shelter Island.
Western Long Island --- Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau County.
Central Long Island --- Babylon, Huntington, Smithtown, Islip, Brookhaven (except Manorville - the Moriches area)
Eastern Long Island --- Riverhead, Southampton, Southold, East Hampton, Shelter Island and far eastern Brookhaven (Manorville, the Moriches area).
