My husband bought a Walther {PPS/M2 in 9MM} pistol on Saturday - we met seller at the gun store - clerk ran NICS check - he passed - he received a voucher showing purchase and picture of gun - Today we went to pistol license bureau - the pistol was added to his license - we went back to the store to pick up the gun.
AKA The Yaphank Shuffle

Expenses for Honest Citizen to exercise 2nd Amendment Right:

Cost of putting on license by County - $5.00
Cost of gun store paperwork/NICS - $40.00
Gas at $4.00/gallon to go to store - pistol bureau - back to store
Husband gets hungry - stop at Mcdonalds - $10.00

The government does not make it cheap or easy - a lot of hoops to jump through!!

That actually seemed pretty easy and cheap.

What toy came with the kids meal?

Sounds easy to me. Walk in. 5 min check of license. Pay for item. Walk out with item in a nice case with a nice lock. Easy peasy.

Actually that seems pretty reasonable to me. If they made it a lot more we would have even more illegal guns on hand.

It's not easy at all. What OP left out, is how difficult it is to get a pistol permit. Comparing that, to illegal guns is absurd. People carrying illegal guns don't bother with permits, or legally transferring. Key word is "HONEST", aka law abiding citizen.

Easy? Resonable? LOL

If you live in the western part of Suffolk County, it's about an hour each way to police HQ. If your purchase is from elsewhere in NYS (upstate has much better gun stores with much better selections, especially on pre-owned) then it is hours more added to make the 2-3 trips.

That's on top of the 18+ months you wait to get a license (when the mandated maximum is six months).

The delays and run-around do nothing for "safety." It is just to make things more difficult than they need to be. This BS is pretty much specific to downstate. Most other NYS counties do not attempt to deny people's rights. Long Island criminals don't flock to the Catskills because it is a mecca for illegal gun traffic.

Gun ownership is a _right_ enumerated in the US Constitution (and NY Constitution). The Heller decision settled any semantic argument on that.

For those who feel the Long Island specific restrictions are reasonable, why not try to apply those same restrictions to voting, speech, or religion?

What if voting means multile trips to Yahpank and your poling place? A background check is required, along with fees to the local and federal government.

How about free speech? In order to post something political on this forum, you need a license (which could take up to 18 months to get. Unless you said something objectionable 20 years ago or have a few speeding tickets. Then you might be denied). Then, each time you want to post, you need to drive to Yaphank to get the post approved. Come back home, enter the post, get a receipt, drive back to Yaphank to show the receipt, then drive home and hit "send." All while paying fees for each post.

Also, keep in mind that most gun laws have their roots in racism. In NYC, the Sullivan Act was designed to keep guns out of the hands of Italian immigrants and in the hands of the highly corrupt ruling class. In the south, gun laws were designed to keep guns away from blacks.

"Gun Control" is not about guns, it is about control. All these rules do NOTHING to prevent criminals from access to guns - they only make it more difficult for honest, law-abiding citizens to get them. It's actually much easier and quicker to buy an illegal gun in NY than an legal one.

So doing a deal with a shady criminal who is armed and may rob you is easier than walking into a firearms store with a credit card and license? Ok. Next you are going to tell us that it's easier to buy your prescriptions illegally than going to Rite Aid and paying the 5 buck copay.

VERY well said. You are however, wasting your breath. Most don't get it.

In California you have to pass a firearms test and pay a lot more for storage fees as you have to wait ten days to pick it up. They also make you buy a california approved locking case each time unless you have the receipt from one you bought yourself. The fees can almost match the price of the firearm.

Buying ammo later and you get to pay for another back ground check.

Pretty sure a criminal won't even try to buy a gun legally. It's supposed to be against the law for felons to try and buy but something like 80K a year try and we prosecute a handful.
