So doing a deal with a shady criminal who is armed and may rob you is easier than walking into a firearms store with a credit card and license? Ok. Next you are going to tell us that it's easier to buy your prescriptions illegally than going to Rite Aid and paying the 5 buck copay.
You have watched too many movies. Yes, it is easier for a criminal to get an illegal gun than it is for a law-abiding citizen to get a legal one. Smart criminals like repeat business. If word gets around that you rob potential customers, you don't last very long. Most illegal gun sales are not back-alley transactions in the dead of night.
Of course, it is illegal. You risk jail time and other problems. Then again, it's usually criminals who purchase this way, so those people already don't care about laws and consequences.
The topic is about handguns in Suffolk county. It is a multi-step process.
1. Go to store, find a gun.
2. Get background check. This should take less than an hour. When the system is busy it could take hours or days.
3. Once you pass check, pay for the gun
4. Do NOT take possession. Get your bill of sale.
5. Take bill of sale to Suffolk County PD. Pay fee. Get permission slip.
6. Drive back to gun store. Show permission slip, pick up gun.
7. Drive back to Suffolk County PD. Show gun. Have it added to license.
Process 5-7 has a time limit of 14 days. The SCPD office is only open weekdays from 9am-4:30pm. For most, this means taking from one to two days off work to complete the process.
Now substitute "vote" instead of "gun." How many on this forum would support such a process to vote? Or to pray? Or to post a complaint about the government?
edited to add: the whole process is in addition to getting the license in the first place. To get the license you have to wait about 18 months, pass full federal and state background checks (much more involved than the NICS check done during purchase), and be vetted during a personal interview with the police. The license has to be renewed every five years. Any criminal behavior while licensed gets reported and will likey have your license revoked.
So when going to buy that gun, you have already been investigated and cleared to a higher standard than someone running for president (the person who commands our military and has access to nuclear launch codes). So even after you are already cleared and approved to possess and purchase, you still have to go through another BS process every time you make another purchase.
So, absolutely YES. It is easier to walk into a gun store that does illegal things on the side, hand them a credit card, and walk out in five minutes with an "illegal" gun.
it's not easy at all. What op left out, is how difficult it is to get a pistol permit. Comparing that, to illegal guns is absurd. People carrying illegal guns don't bother with permits, or legally transferring. Key word is "honest", aka law abiding citizen.

That's ridiculous. It's kind of like the CCW system here, also ridiculous. People can buy an 80% lower and build their own in a matter of hours and have the barrel sent to their houses anywhere in the US.
Suffolk should be like many other states that are far less restrictive with no background checks! Carry permits are just for those in law enforcement. So much for upholding the constitution!
Getting a Suffolk County Pistol License is a process taking 6-18 months - by law you should have a decision in 6 months - you must fill out paperwork, provide 4 notarized references from people who live in Suffolk - after the county runs an extensive background search, you appear at the pistol license bureau - you are fingerprinted - you are interviewed - and then if the stars are aligned, they issue you a license.
(Background search includes questions about divorce, child custody, military record, and they do a credit search).
total cost about $200.00.
Even though NYS is a "shall" issue state, it's a long and arduous process.

It wasn't like this 10 years ago.
