Two areas I've been looking at and trying to convince the spousal unit to move to are Commack and Smithtown. Are there any areas in these two towns that have sewers rather than cesspools? I've never had to deal with a cesspool or knew anybody that had to so I don't know what to expect. It doesn't sound appealing.

This is not true, there are sewers in Suffolk it's just scattered. I have a relative in Melville on sewers 1 mile away a friend of ours in Melville has a cespool. Probbaly 70% of Suffolk is not on the sewer system

Oh ok, didn't know that. When I was looking at houses (commack, smithtown, dix hills, east northport, melville) every house we looked at had a cesspool.

These areas are all have cesspools. I wouldn't make that alone, though, be the deciding factor.

Whats wrong with ceesspools?
There's probably more homes in the US on cesspools than sewers.
Nothing to be scared of.
Do potential property homework and find out when where and how about the cesspool.
Post '65 is most likely cast so that's great.
Before that is hit or miss and most likely block which could have issues.
Just get the full skinny before you buy.

We moved to Smithtown a couple of years ago and I was also shocked to find that sewers are very rare in Suffolk. It's been a little adjustment, but really not that big of a deal. We had the cesspool pumped when we moved in as the PO was a widow who hadn't done much maintenance over the previous few years.

I believe there are some areas of Kings Park, which borders Smithtown and Commack that have sewers.

10-15 years before I bought this home, seller put in new cesspool and overflow. He claimed he never needed to have it serviced or pumped even once. Wasn sure I believed him with all the horror stories I’ve read and heard. I’ve owned for 5 years now. Same thing, never had to do anything.
