I retire from teaching in June and I hope to leave by July. I'm already working with a real estate agent in Portland & I guess I will do the same here. The market is not so great here that I can sell my house in Newsday as I once did.

Oregon. I love the northwest & San Francisco would be my first choice, but even a teeny studio there would be over $500k . Seattle is getting too crowded and costly, too. Portland is affordable for now. And, it is kind of a cool place to live. No snow. No hot summers. Great transit system. Nice people.

I am against mulitlevels for the crime (a lot of criminal activities take place in those/rapes/whatever).
I agree we need alternative to driving, not just on Long Island but everywhere in this country.
I wish we had a light rail or some alternative. I am stuck without a second car and we can't afford it, so I can't work. Vicious cycle.

Gotta do something....this aint working.
Most of Suffolk county is well over an Hour to a paycheck by rail or car.
Even Queens sucks...it used to take my uncle 50 minutes to NY from Douglaston.
Well, they do have multi-levels in Huntington and they have for awhile.
I just don't like those car parks because on Law & Order they always have people being murdered in them. Susan has just left the office. She had to work late and she needs to get home to her young children . The garage is dark and shadows loom everywhere. Her heels echo in the empty carpark . Click. click. click.
Sounds of heavy footsteps coming closer .... closer Well, you know the rest.
I know people who were taking the Babylon trains would park in the public lot behind the paint store (was it Rainbow??) and walk from there to the station.
I also knew someone who regularly got stuff stolen off his car (trim, battery, whathaveyou) when it was parked in what used to be the "dirt lot" across from the highschool athletic fields (they've since paved that lot, haven't they?).
That lot is still there, not sure if it's paved.
On weekends (when I go to Babylon) there is a lot of parking. However, you better park the right way (direction) or you will get a ticket.
My husband got one once parking in the wrong direction.
The transportation problem is yet another 'bury head in the sand' problem on Long Island, along with lack of affordable housing.
