Thx Kev & MedbutArr, I was away when you posted this. Very interesting stuff. I've purposefully been avoiding keeping up with broadcasting since I left that business. I was not as ready to leave it all behind for a real job with better benies as I thought I would be. I still hate cable, but these days you're forced to have it thanks to "deregulation", that euphemism for "political payoffs".

I got out of it 14 years ago. I started in it 25 years ago. It has changed a lot but after deregulation, I saw the writing on the wall and decided the future looked better in telecom which is what I do now.

You were smart to do that. TV ain't what it used to be, and radio is all but gone.

I get perfectly stable reception of all local digital channels with a pair of rabbit ears. I actually took down my outdoor antenna last summer as it wasn't needed. Fox comes in at 100/100 signal strength. Lowest (of the big 4) is NBC at around 75/100. If you have an older digital tuner it is probably less sensitive and needs an outdoor antenna. But anything made in the last few years should be sensitive enough to receive with an indoor antenna.

Thanks to the information from MediocreButArrogant, I got the courage to try and get over the air TV in our new home in Henderson Green Valley area. I am not technically savvy and it was a little scary to try that.

I am using a new Samsung 32” HDTV and a RS 1892 UFO antenna for VHF/UHF.
They are both positioned indoor next to a second floor window facing south, which should be the best reception from most channels broadcasting from two locations 5 miles and 7 miles away.

After a few failures and fiddling around, I managed to get NBC, local FOX, ABC, two local stations in English and several Spanish channels. That was exciting and the picture is extremely clear and detailed.
However, I cannot get CBS. According to signal strength maps, I should be able to receive it. What am I doing wrong?

Sounds strange. If you can get ABC, you should be able to get CBS also since they seem to be in about the same spot. Maybe CBS has a weaker transmitter. Try repositioning the antenna and rescanning and if it still doesn't work, you may need a different antenna or a signal amplifier.

I don't understand.
Why not just pay for service?

You get uncompressed local HD channels (better picture quality), you are not affected by periodic cable outages and you have no monthly fees.
Paying for cable only makes sense when you need to watch channels only available on cable.

I've had no luck with this at all. I can't pick up anything worth watching. Only some strange channels I've never seen before. Next I will try moving the tv and antenna to another room and see if that helps.
