I've been asked to move to Las Vegas and gone to your fair city for both amusement and to really look around. So far it seems too HOT in summer, too cool in winter and the landscape is horrible. All those thousands of houses choc-a-bloc next to each other so you always have your neighbors' company.

The schools are lousy and unemployment about the highest in the country. If you do not work in the servitude (excuse me, "service industry") you might not work.

There are no major league sports clubs, no baseball, basketball, or football. They do not want the corruption of Las Vegas gambling kings to touch their sports.

So? I cannot figure it out. Looking at this forum and all the questions about moving to Las Vegas, yet the area seems to be a trap for young and old. Well, old folks can at least go and play the slot machines all day in the air conditioned casinos, so that might be an incentive.

OK, I do know that housing costs are now low IF you are buying. Of course they are low because some poor family or single person actually thought $390,000 was a great price for a cement block home when the interest rate was 4% for the first couple of years.

Oh, surprise, now it is 15% or whatever amount you cannot pay out of your pension or service person's wage less taxes, etc.

So, tell me. Are there good reasons to move to Las Vegas? Why did you move? Why are you hesitating? I know the attraction for me is very strong, but not because of the city and I am trying to figure out if it is worthwhile.

Thanks.

George.

Depends on what people are moving her for. Some are moving due to their job (already have a position here). Vegas is great, but just not for everyone.

The weather you get use to (I personally came from PA). I love the heat. I actually drive a car without AC, so you do get use to it. Remember it is a dry heat. Cool winters, lol. Sorry but cool to us is 50. When I first started coming here, before I moved here, I would wear short sleeved shirts, because it was a lot warmer then where I came from.

The economy is pretty bad, but maybe it is a lot better then where they are coming from.

I moved here for work six year ago during the boom. There have been highs and lows. I always knew the wave had to crest and it did. I regret moving here. I own a home that I am stuck in and am working for a company that feels like it is about to go under. I miss my family and friends back east. I also miss most of the things that you mentioned... sports teams, culture, etc...

There are some things I still like about Las Vegas, but its time to move on. It's great for some, but not for me. I'm a city boy at heart and Vegas lacks all of the things the city has to offer.

It sounds like your mind is already made up with that post which BTW couldn't be further from the truth. The biggest negative of Vegas is the heat which is why I always advise anyone who wants to move here to spend 1-2 weeks here in July or August. The other 10 months of the year are fantastic with very little humidity. If you're looking for green grass and 4 seasons then this is NOT the place for you. This is the desert so all of the landscaping will be reflective of that.

As for the "choc a bloc" comment, there are some communities where that applies but not all communities are that way. My house sits on 1/2 acre surrounded by block walls so I have complete privacy in my back yard.

The schools are fine here, not at the top of the education ladder but not nearly at the bottom either. The majority of the jobs are going to be in hospitality since Vegas has always been a city of hospitality; however, there are jobs available in other fields, one has to apply themselves and be patient. Unemployment isn't even close to some cities in California or Detroit.

The only reason why there isn't a pro sports team here right now is lack of an arena, it has nothing to do with gambling. Right now you have the 51's which is AAA (Blue Jays), Wranglers Hockey (ECHL) which are excellent bargains. Coming from DC where it costs $30 to just park your car at Redskins' games then having to walk 1/2 mile to FedEx Field puts things in perspective.

Interest rates are not even close to 15%. One of my golfing partners has terrible credit yet qualified at a 30-year fixed at 6% last week with 20% down, houses are a good deal but not quite the bargain basement.

I've been coming here for 4 years as a tourist then moved here 2 years ago, I've been all over the country looking for areas to move to from DC and Vegas gave me everything I was looking for in terms of climate (my trap is that I can play golf year-round compared to the east coast). Vegas is not perfect; however, there is no utopia anywhere in the country.

A lot of people who move here have no idea the economy is bad.

I think they do, but they think they are the best and have been in the industry for a long time, so they will have no problems. I would think that most managers that have lived in Vegas for awhile, would hire a local before someone from out of town. I know in our industry, we hire locals, who know the areas of town, before people that just moved here. I would always ask, Ok, where is Summerlin, Sun City Anthem, Southern Highlands? That would prove to me that they have some knowledge of the town.

In our case, I can't think of any place better to move than to Vegas. Where we are in Ohio, the unemployment rate is close to 14%, property taxes are 3% of appraised value, at least half the year you live huddled in the house for warmth and there is NOTHING to do. When summer finally comes, we have maybe 10 great days with the others being swamp like humidity or as it is again today, overcast and barely 60. If you go through a process of elimination, it would not be going east with the same weather patterns and topography. It would not be a southern state where it is very important if your grandparents came over on the Mayflower. It would not be Atlanta with it's high crime rate or high humidity Florida with reptiles and high immigration stats. It would not be Texas because I don't care to change clothes three times a day to accomodate the weather nor do we like Tex-Mex and expensive houses. It would not be the Pacific N.W. even though it is beautiful there but who likes rain? It definately would not be California with all they go through to live there so basically we are down now to a nice area in Arizona. We would get the same dessert beauty there but also more humidity, higher priced houses and a state tax. So looking at it that way, my question is, why not Las Vegas???

I was born and lived almost my whole life in Phoenix, Arizona. I moved here three years ago and never looked back. I would highly recommend coming to Vegas over Phoenix. You have a crazy Sherrif in Phoenix, and photo radar all over the place, even freeways. They also have a state income tax unlike Nevada. Also, it is not a 24 hour town like Vegas. There are absolutely no advantages to living in Phoenix over Vegas.

It sounds like you already made up your mind you wouldn't want to live here and that's okay.
I wouldn't really say Vegas is bad because of the things you mentioned it's just different.
Desert Landscaping is great it's less maintenance,it's a dry heat and you do aclimate, and the crime is down. Our schools do leave much to be desired there is no denying that, there are a few good schools .
And like most places unemployment is high so you want to secure a job before you come as you should no matter where you move.

We moved here from Montana, and we would never go back .
The weather is hot in Vegas in the summer but you have airconditioned homes and business's and cars so why is it such a big deal. If you want to spend time out side a pool is great that is what we do or you can go to mount Charleston it's about 87 there in the summer and it's only 30 minutes away. And in the winter you can snow ski there.

Or you can go to lake Mead and hang out at the lake and enjoy water sports, and there is the entertainment. There is other parks close by Red Rock and Valley of Fire. There is always something going on here. You must remember this is the desert so of course the landscape will be different.

That's some of the reasons people like Las Vegas

Some of the negatives listed are true - it does get really hot in the summer and our economy is in a tough spot right now.

But there are also plenty of positives. Some of the greatest nightlife in the country. Lots of entertainment options (concerts always come here, lots of permanent shows, etc.). Top-notch dining. The ability to enjoy outdoor recreation, such as golf or jogging, year round. Beautiful snow-covered mountains in the winter (good for skiing, sledding, etc.). Some really nice neighborhoods with nice homes (and yes, larger lots do exist).
