Vegas is a place where one third of the population do their banking in a casino, pawn shop or payday loan joint.

Ions of smart and beautiful women? They've gained or lost an electron? I've heard the term "cougar" before, but never cation. (Or anion, for that matter.)

Sorry, I can't agree with this observation. I work with plenty of smart, attractive women. I also work with plenty of smart, less than attractive women. And plenty of less-than-smart people in general. But where I work, the only thing that matters is, "Can they do the job?" I'll take a homely, ignorant coworker who can get the job done every day of the week over a smart, attractive slack-ass.

And frankly, if you're looking for a rocket scientist, you should move to Pasadena and hob-nob with the folks at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

First, I like LV. I fly back there every week from college back East. That being said, it's all relative my friend.

Refer to my post responding to someone about the white collar professions in Vegas in this thread...or rather the lack thereof.

Vegas has many positive things, but education and intellect of the masses ain't one of them. Vegas routinely rates as one of the dumbest states in the nation--and often even surpasses such intellectual stalwarts as Mississippi and Alabama.

"The Dumbest State: Nevada

Poor Nevada. Not only are they one of the unhappiest states in the U.S., but they also have a terrible education system. According to one recent survey, Nevada had the worst public school system in the country, excluding D.C. (lucky for them, not a state and thus not ranked here). On top of this, fewer than 20 percent of Nevadans have completed a bachelor’s degree and only 86 percent have graduated high school. The average SAT score in this state was a 1485, which was the 11th worst nationwide.

In 2008, the Nevada Policy Research Institute argued that the problem was not the amount of money spent on education, but rather where that money went. “By the time a child takes the NAEP fourth-grade reading exam, Nevada has spent more than $40,000 on that child's education,” the institute wrote. Unfortunately, Nevada is still struggling to get it right. The governor recently announced plans for cuts in education spending."

The Dumbest States in America - MainStreet

yea, yea, yea, attack the methodology;that stripper you met last night IS actually pretty smart...lol...

Facts are facts bro....come on man, if that guy who works in Silicon Valley chimes in I am sure he would agree with my point.

I agree that being smart or well rounded has very little to do with being a successful service employee. As a matter of fact, I think it would even be counterproductive to be a highly intelligent service worker in most cases...you, of course, not withstanding.

Aside from the fact that "Vegas" is not a state....

Do you not see the idiocy of stating in one post that Vegas doesn't have smart women like DC does, and then as "evidence" of this you cite a source that shows that DC is the one place that ranks lower than NV?

Now I'll grant you that the populace of DC is more educated than the populace of LV. But lack of education is not the same as not being smart.

No, not all my friend. You are trying to be too cute. Attack the main thread of the argument, if you substitute Vegas for Nevada does the thrust of my point change? Do the demographics in Reno, Carson city, or Henderson present radically different contrasts to Vegas?

Do you really think I don't know that the greater LV metropolitan area does not constitute all of Nevada (darn near a majority I suspect).

Negative

First, the public school system was only one of the factors that lead to the dumbest state designation.

DC and Vegas are both transplant cities but there the similarities end. DC is a remarkably stratified city...where you have a large underclass combined with a a highly educated government orientated workforce that does not live in DC..or at least does not send their kids to DC public schools. Although there are some top notch paraochial and charter schools in DC along with some peerless private schools (Sidwell Friends (?) and St. Albans). I would venture to say that little DC has more higher ranked high schools than the entire State of Nevada does.

Why does one need a good education to hand out towels in the bathroom of Pure for 4000 per month? Better to spend the money on a good plastic surgeon than a college degree..as the silicone will likely earn that 24 year hottie more than a degree will.

Don't get me started on UNLV vs Georgetown, American, GW, etc.

What rubric would you like to use? Most likely any meritous method you choose will prove my argument.

I agree that education and being smart are not always correlated.

There is nothing wrong with a place that does not value education and prefers style over substance...but at least be honest about it. I think that education for the masses is overrated and college can be a colossal waste of time.

It's been a while since I've been up north but, yes.

I'll grant you that Las Vegas is a flashy place and that DC is awash in govt. money (thus funds for education) but before people write articles calling people "dumbest" they need to verify their data. "Dumb" is not a matter of education, it's a matter of intelligence. Did they issue an IQ test to the state when I wasn't looking?

Oh and since we are on the topic of data, here is a link for you: SwitchNAP - Data Centers, Colocation Services Las Vegas, NV

Did you know that if a hospital or outpatient radiology facility anywhere in the world buys a Toshiba MRI, the protocols were worked out here in LV? TOSHIBA INSTALLS FIRST VANTAGE TITAN 3T IN U.S. « Press Releases

Have a nice day.

I have heard of Switchnap before. Good enterprise....but tech is not Vegas...gambling/vice, conventions, and tourism is Vegas...how many jobs and how much money is generated for the area by tech and how much by tourism?

See my point?

I bet there are more strippers at the Huster Club in one month than there are current employees of Switchnet. I would take this bet for five bucks.

I am not saying that there is not some tech, it, and healthcare in Vegas...but it's trivial compared to the vice related stuff.

Again, nothing wrong with this.

My guess is that the dumbest state methodology was combination of SAT scores, percent of seniors that took the test, hs graduation rates, quality of higher education in the state, and percent of the population with college and advanced degrees.
