My husband and I are planning on buying a house in Summerlin and are concentrating our search to either the Givens elementary or Staton elementary school zones. I noticed that Givens elementary will be on a year round calendar next year. I don't really want to start another discussion on the merits of a 9-month-vs 12-month school year, I think there are distinct advantages and disadvantages to both. However, will being in a 12 month school district affect the value of our home in a negative way? Is Givens likely to revert back to a 9-month in the future thus negating any affect it has on home value in the future? Does anyone know if the parents and teachers are glad that the school has been turned into a year round school or are they disgruntled with the change? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer on this.

Hi nursewithgrace, while I don't have children in that school, I can say that the 9 month versus 12 month debate has been long standing. I personally liked the 12 month school year when our school changed from 9 month to year round. We were able to take vacations when most kids were in school, so it worked out great.

The issue with Givens is that there is controversey as to whether it really HAS to be designated as a 12 month school. There are questions about the reliability of the data taken by the school board personnel in determining the need for this school to revert to 12 month status.

Givens might go back to a 9 month school. But with homes being sold and more families with kids buying the foreclosed homes, there is a risk that it won't. I know a couple of kids that go to Givens, and no, their parents are not happy that it went to 12 month status. They were used to the traditional 9 month school like when THEY were kids, and are not used to the change.

In no way does the fact that an elementary school on a 12 month calendar negate the value of your home. Summerlin is a desirable area and Laura Givens ES is a beautiful, newly designed school. Ethel Staton ES is also a fine school, up in the Arbors Village in Summerlin. Really, either one is a good choice.

I would claim it has little if any effect on housing value. A 12 month school home may sell a little better as there is a buyer bias to 9 month but it is really not a big enough effect to change value.

I would ignore it if everything else works for you.
