Why are posters so upset that someone pointed the facts out about the casino's huge drop in revenue and the problems they face?

I'm from Minnesota and saw this extensively covered on national tv.

Casino operators stated the cancellation of conventions is killing them as that is a big source of their profits.

A spokesperson stated that companies are cancelling their conventions cuz they don't want to be stigmatized by the public for holding it in Las Negas.
Instead, he said, they are dishing out more $$$$$$$ by holding it in a different city.

Yes, drawing conventions is a big part of the casinos' revenue.

In the spirit of avoiding personal invective and focusing on the positive, even through the negative, I pay attention to all sources of information. I see nothing derogatory in the initial poster's observations--it's all backed up by contemporary news sources or known professional observations. The poster does not predict the fall of society and even asks for factual data to counterbalance what they have seen/read. Think teachers aren't worried about their jobs? Check teacher net for a good cross section of the state of education in Clark County. My wife and I are moving to Vegas in June--even though I am currently a teacher, the level of anxiety from professional colleagues, reported budget woes and perceptions of constant change in the CCSD have convinced me to find some other source of income. I'll still apply for a NV teacher's license, but it'll be a last-gasp job hope, and the openly expressed opinions and information on this exchange have helped me to formulate this opinion.

Sorry KillerStephen but when I post at 1 am I do not feel like spell checking myself, call me lazy if you want.
Spike42, I do hope that the stimulus money put aside for education will be coming to Nevada but nothing is guaranteed yet. We will need the legislature to (re)establish 2006 levels of funding (not going to happen) or we need a waiver from the federal government (hopefully that will happen).
I do not want to appear as all doom and gloom, these are just facts, and like many in the private or public sector, I am worried about losing my job.

Might I suggest Firefox? It has a built in spell checker. Why should I "change the station"? I've been "listening" longer. We locals know what's going on better than anyone. What makes us angry is when people from outside the area come on here, treating us like little children who haven't heard the news many times over. We don't live in cloistered monastaries, we do read the paper, and watch the news.

Tell me, ye' dewellers of the space below bridges, do you go on areas, such as MI's, of CD, and tell them how bad they're doing? Or do we rate some sort of special privilege, when it comes to your signal to noise ratio?

These are sad times for the casino industry...not just in LV, but in any jurisdiction that relies on their operations.

What surprises me most, though, is that it took this long for The Riv to go bankrupt??? They should have been long gone.

Actually, outside of LV and Atlantic City (and places like Illinois, but that started some time ago with the smoking ban in casinos) - many local markets are doing ok - not great, not horrible either. This is because generally non LV/ATC casinos rely on primarily gaming revenue, not hotel/amenity/show revenue, and gaming revenue in local jurisidctions, while down in many cases, isn't that far off YOY.

Of course, it varies for each market and each company, but generally, those US casino companies with heavy investment outside of Atlantic City and Las Vegas plus not a lot of debt load are holding their own.

Thanks for the tip (firefox) aqualung, and yes new should be knew but again when posting at one 1 am, I did not give a oot (ooops hoot). I have been on this forum for 2 years, I did not know you became such sticklers all of a sudden! (and by the way I never claimed to teach English)

Aqualung, I am not sure if your comment was directed at me but yes I am a local, and have a local for a while. I am confident that the economy will bounce back. In the meantime, I am just wondering what the finances are going to look like for the next biennium.
