I am going to move to Vegas soon and become a casino dealer but I wanted to ask a few questions and I hope you guys can help me out

First of all, I heard that you will start out at a local casino in downtown and I heard that the average income including tips and everything is about 40-50k. But I was wondering, is that the average income if you deal in the pit, or a poker dealer?

Also, about how long does it usually take on average to move on up to the strip after dealing at the local downtown casinos?

I also have a quick question of the crime rate. I am planning to move in to an apartment, Renaissance Villas, located in West Tropicana Avenue. I think it's located in the city of Spring Valley compared to other parts of Las Vegas. I heard that some places like near Las Vegas Blvd. and the northern part of Vegas was pretty bad, so I was wondering how that location that I am so far planning to move to was when it comes to crime rate.

Ummm Spring Valley is not a city,it is part of an area. There is a thread though that allows you to look up current crime stats via zip code though.I looked up Renaissance Villas about a month ago because I am looking for an apartment out there myself. They are good in my book.Great community, pretty good reviews, pictures look decent. The only problem with what I said is that I don't live there;not even in Southern Nevada. So I never have driven through the area during the day or at night, but I do know a great deal of information that the average outsider wouldn't know about the West Trop@South Decatur area.

I used to live in Renaissance Villas. Decent place, very little if any crime (although my truck was stolen while I lived there). Has it's share of apartment related issues though, just like any other place. They also charge for water, trash, and sewer now. They calculate the water usage charges on the total usage divided by total residents. So if you use less water than your neighbor than you will pick up their slack. I have actually heard that many complexes do this now.

Can't comment on your job related questions, as I just don't know.

I do not, and have never, worked in a casino as a dealer. However, I have put in many, many hours on the losing side of the tables

With that said, annual pay $40K-$50K per year on average does not sound reasonable for an average casino dealer.

In many professions, fantasy "averages" are calculated by taking someoneone's very best week, even if it can't be repeated, and then multiply by 52. I'm sure a great number of dealers have earned over a $1,000 per week on occasion. Average? No. Typical? Certainly not.

Salary.com lists the middle 50% of dealers in Las Vegas as earning between $25,965/yr and $34,474/yr (base salary & tips/bonuses combined).

Sounds a little low, but maybe not for 2008 if you factor in all the off-Strip properties, but if they are using IRS data they probably are not capturing all the tips. The big driver, I would say, is reduced hours - at most 80% of what it used to be. Tips are off a lot, too.

In good times, it would not surprise me that dealers on the Strip could average 60k, although that could be a little skewed by people who would regularly pull 60-70 hour weeks (that's about the only way a dealer could pul in 80-100k). Now, you're happy if you can get 32 hours a week.

I remember it being televised that dealers that work for the Wynn regularly make over $100,000 a year.

My wife is FT at an off-strip site making $6.85+tips. However as I stated last week, there has been a lot of turnover recently so she is getting a bit of overtime and they have also asked her to be a pit assistant. This after she has only been there less than 6 months.

The jobs are there, the money is not great but there is opportunity even in the down economy.
