People need to stop anthropomorphizing animals. It's everywhere in our modern language.

I heard the radio clip where "officer down" was used when the dog was shot. Come on.
Police dogs are sworn peace officers in many, if not most, jurisdictions.

And "Arrest" is a perfectly appropriate term for what the dog was sent to do.

Arrest:
Full Definition of arrest
transitive verb
1
a : to bring to a stop <sickness arrested his activities>
b : check, slow
c : to make inactive <an arrested tumor>
2
: seize, capture; specifically : to take or keep in custody by authority of law
3
: to catch suddenly and engagingly <arrest attention>

In large machines we run into parts known as sacrificial. They are relatively cheap and easy to replace parts that are designed to fail when things get out of tolerance before a really expensive part is damaged. Think of them as mechanical fuses. Sadly, that's what Nicky was.

Now, if you aren't ok with dogs being sacrificial, argue that. Nicky did what he was supposed to do and did it well. For that he should be admired. But make no mistake, his job was to die before a human officer died and that's what he did.

Sigh. It's cute to use words and phrases we use for humans when it comes to animals. Is a dog used in Afghanistan really a soldier? We both know the definition "soldier" has always been meant for a human. Is a dog carrying medical supplies really a doctor with 8 years plus residency?

I saw an April fools joke carried out by cops somewhere where they told a motorist that they were part of the feline patrol and that he was going to have his cat check his car for illegal substances. The motorist complied. Really? Trained drug cats? Speaking of this story, is a dog or cat in a car considered a motorist too?

Nicky wasn't sent in to arrest anyone. He was sent in to bite the ***** out of someone, so an officer could safely conduct the arrest.

The latest news on CH-3 just now was that Nicky was shot by friendly fire.

That has been mentioned several times on this thread already. It doesn't change my position at all.

If a cop shooting Nicky saved a single human life, it's ok by me and part of his purpose.

But it still sucks.

Well, maybe. But I don't see in any of these posts that it was a cop's bullet that killed the dog. That would be hard to live with, though. Anyway, let's face it, they use dogs because dogs are more expendable than a human, like it or not.

A man a lot smarter than any of us said that "Production is the basis of morale"; and that even a working animal is much happier than a lap dog.

Actually they use dogs mainly because the animals are in many cases better able to quickly and effectively get the job done of locating and taking down a suspect. Plus many suspects are very aware of this and will surrender without further incident rather then have the dog turned loose on them.

Apparently their position and that of most everyone who wrote on here is that the dog was a non-important, easily replaceable living creature whose life was so worthless it wasn't even necessary to consider a bullet proof vest for it. Money is the bottom line in life and because Nicky could not command a paycheck.....worthless. So proud of you people.

It doesn't have to be one extreme or the other. Dogs lives are not worthless nor are they more important than a humans. Somewhere in the middle of the two extremes you've described would be nice.

They have a problem in that Metro can't seem to afford to buy flak jackets for the dogs, so there is a move afoot to raise money for that. Of course, Metro can afford to pay various cops something like $300,000 in unused leave....
