you are correct that LV is not Silicon Valley, or in any shape and form similar to it.

Large tech hub vs large adult playground?

LV has more of a chance of becoming a tech hub before SV would have a chance of becoming an adult playground.

You're right Buzz, and not even close. A app store with 25 employees is like a large Tupperware party. It's not manufacturing. There is no incentive for hi-tech to move to Clark county.

My neighbor here in Vegas is an Engineer who worked for decades in Silicon Valley. He still commutes there for work quite often.

My good friend/boss was an Executive Vice President at Microsoft before moving here to Vegas from Redmond, WA a few years ago.

Tony Heish is investing hundreds of millions of dollars banking on attracting tech sector jobs and young professionals to Vegas.

There are some very talented professionals here if you are in the right circles or, know where to look.

I think the next chapter of the young city of Vegas is going to be a very interesting one.

Who is Tony Heish? Does Zappos have a new CEO now?

I know UNLV isn't necessarily a top school, but is it a relatively serviceable school for a CS degree? For high tech to take off in Vegas, I do think you need a pretty good consistent source new talent. I don't think it needs to be Stanford, but at least in the beginning, I don't think you can completely rely on relocations.

I'm in Silicon Valley now, but considering a move to Vegas. My plan has been to largely work from home (which I do now anyway), with periodic trips to the Bay Area. In this day and age, any place can be the base for a tech company, and Las Vegas seems as good as any, and the connection with the entertainment business can certainly be leveraged.

Vegas might be a good fit for a company to set up shop. No state income tax, one of the lowest cost of living for a metro in the country, plenty of entertainment, close to servers in LA and SF.
