Until you go looking for workers and realize that even the qualified have started living the Vegas lifestyle. Hiring high tech people in Vegas blows. I'm at CES right now wondering why he he'll I even moved. Taxes, I know, but still...

That's been my experience with IT jobs that refuse to pay for talent. Paying 40k for a "server admin" gets you the pot head/pc gamer who shows up about half the time.

Once the pay scale increases, no problems with professionalism.

Exactly. If you offer the same pay scale in Vegas as in Silicon Valley, I don't think you will have any problem relocating talented IT workers to Vegas. But if you want to be cheap, and start saying cost of living is cheaper so you want to pay them cheap, blah, blah, blah...that's the first sign of a bad employer, so good luck.

40k for system IT is low but I've seen even more ridiculous pay. I've seen shady places try to get system admins at $9/hour. I don't understand how they think they can insult people with that pitiful salary.

Lack of water is a factor as well. Manufacturing needs water.

I'm not sure what manufacturing you're talking about. Almost all of the technology manufacturing is done outside USA now.

What do you think the tech companies manufacture in Silicon Valley?

It's not my field, but I believe wafer fabrication uses a lot of highly purified water as a solvent. That said, I'm not aware of any large semiconductor fabs that still exist in Silicon Valley. They don't require a highly educated workforce to operate, so they're built wherever it's cheap (or they can get incentives) and there is a sufficient supply of cheap trainable labor.

Just found this via search: Where did Silicon Valley's Fabs Go? - Forbes

I meant to say E3. I always confuse the two for some reason. Anyway, I don't know if you're trying to say that my pay is the reason it's difficult to find talent, but it's not. Also, not everyone looking for talent is looking for IT as much as you people would love to think the world evolves around you.
