My house is in CA,but I have 2 works , one in CA and another in NV (live about 6 months in Ca and in NV respectively). I bought a used car in NV and registered in DMV of NV.

Can I use my CA home address to have my car insurance? Please help, many thanks!!

No. To drive a car that is registered in Nevada, the insurance must be on nevada paper. If you registered the car in Nevada and don’t have nevada insurance, you will be fined big time!

Your insurance must be written for Nevada and at least one of the named insured must appear on the vehicle registration. Minimum coverage is 25/50/20.
How did you register your car in NV without NV insurance?

Not true, I bought a car in California and registered it in Nevada when I lived there.
  • I bought the car in California and paid California sales tax
  • I paid a few $ to get a temporary registration (15 or 30 days, I don't remember which)
  • I drove the car to Nevada and went to DMV
  • They deducted the California tax from the Nevada tax, I had paid a few dollars more in California than I owed in Nevada, I didn't get a refund but I didn't owe them any tax
  • I paid for Nevada registration and that was all there was to it.

i find this interesting as every stealership i went to they would not let me pay the ca sales tax let alone buy a temp plate to drive it out. they told me that i had to ship it out on a flatbed

You have to insure the car using the same Nevada address that you used to register the car in Nevada and you have to get a policy that is valid in Nevada.

My advice, pick a state and register your cars in that state. Nevada is horrible about fining you if you go without valid insurance for even one day. The minimum fine for one day without valid insurance in Nevada is $251 and it can go up to $1000 and even increase your annual registration fees.

I negotiated the price and details of my car purchase online, I resolved the issue of how to get the vehicle to Nevada at that time. I bought the car from the Davis Kia dealership and they had no problem with the temporary permit, I'm not sure why a dealer would refuse it unless they are too stupid to know that it can be done that way.

I think they were referring to buying the car in California, not paying the Cali tax, and registering and paying tax in nevada

Nope you have to pay California tax, but it's not higher than Nevada sales tax unless you go to Los Angeles or another City with a high sales tax rate. I live in Sacramento County and the sales tax here is 7.75%. The sales tax in Las Vegas and Reno are around 8.25%
