We are looking for a new friend for our dog. I looked on the Animal Foundation website and it seems like there are a huge bunch of pitt bulls and chi's there. Unfortunately, I am not looking for either of these breeds. I also noticed that almost all the available animals were "unaltered".

I get my animals neutered / spayed immediately. Is there something about those two breeds that cause every irresponsible person in Vegas to get them? So sad for the dogs... WTF is wrong with people?

We adopted a 'pound dog' (pit bull/boxer mix) about 9 years ago from a shelter in CA. Far and away, he's the best dog we've ever owned. His bark sounds ferocious, but he's a sissy -- very gentle and sweet towards everyone. Maybe we got lucky. He has his issues like every other dog, but I wouldn't trade him for anything.

Nothing wrong with Pit Bulls. It's the animals that raise them.

This thread needs to get back to a Las Vegas related issue, or it will be closed. I'm sure there are threads discussing the pit bull issue in the appropriate general forum.

A lot of people who have dogs (of any breed, or "mutts" too) don't bother to get them spayed or neutered. A high percentage of those dogs end up in shelters. The adoption fees then include spaying or neutering, so the shelter doesn't let unaltered dogd out.

If the selection at Clark County doesn't meet your needs, go on Petfinder and see what the rescues and private shelters have available. In the meantime, your dog doesn't need a friend that much, the friendship it needs is yours, so he or she will get by without another dog.

Pit Bulls and Chi's seem to be the two most popular breeds here. I think people want the Pits for guard/protection and the Chi's are just popular. Seems like everyone in Vegas has one or the other of these. These can both be great breeds or a real pain, depends on how they are raised/trained.

What are you looking for?

I think you are required to spay/neuter any animal you get at a shelter here. I believe it is a law, unless you are a licensed breeder. Most of the local shelters have pics available online. I also saw pics posted on CL. Today someone put up the dogs at the Pahrump shelter.

Some breeds have their own rescues set up in Las Vegas, so a lot of times whenever that breed shows up in the shelter they will foster it to prevent it from being euthanized.

Dachshund Rescue

Just Google "[breed name] rescue las vegas" for others

The NSPCA has a no-kill shelter in LV with their own adoptable dogs:
Nevada SPCA

Also +1 to what Observer53 says above. #1 favorite activity above all others for dogs is walking - do it as often as your time and the weather allows

What about a boxer? If I wasn't so busy working or killing pigeons (lol) I'd probably get this dog: Adopt a Pet :: *LACEY - Las Vegas, NV - Boxer

I'm looking for a lab, boxer, or dobie. Thanks for the links aggrofish and others.

I've had great luck with shelter pets in general. Back when Dewey Animal Shelter was open I adopted a large black lab there. I named him Jake. He had such extreme energy, I just could not keep up with him. I put an ad in the paper to find him a good home. He became "Officer Jake" a drug dog here with Metro. They train those drug dogs by soaking their toys in the smells of illegal drugs. They look for high "play drive" which is exactly what Jake had to offer. That dog would tear your SUV apart looking for his toy.

I re-read my post and it sounds way more judgmental than it should have. I like Chi's and Pit Bulls both. I don't like to see them in the pound in droves and my post sounded like I was saying something bad about the breeds or the people that love them. That's not how it was intended at all. I'm an animal lover and I get upset when I see so many dogs suffering.

My current dog is a deaf Aussie and she really enjoys the company of other dogs, but is not well-mannered on a leash, so the dog park is out.. The search continues. Thanks, everyone!
