Not to hijack my own thread, but is there a lack of qualified technical people in Las Vegas? I didn't think I interviewed particularly well and yet the company is flying me out and will pay to move me and my family if they make an offer. Seems strange to shell out the extra expense when you should be able to hire someone locally. Red flag?
Just my personal observations but it seems that finding a general technical person (Windows Desktop Admin or even Windows or Unix Server Admin) is pretty easy in Vegas and the wages reflect that.

Do you have a technical specialty, perhaps an Exchange Admin or a SAN engineer or something like that? Finding good people that are highly skilled in 1 or 2 technical areas can be challenging and might justify a company flying you out, if they liked you on the phone, and paying you moving expenses etc.

No, I'm a software guy. I've been writing mainly LOB apps for the past several years. I would think guys with experience with the MS stack are a dime a dozen. Maybe I'm wrong about that.

If you write good code then it is probably justified to pay the dime to get you out there. And yes, the point of my comment was that your typical MS / Unix admin or a person who is a "Jack of all trades and master of none" are a dime a dozen and the pay reflects that. If you have a decent specialty (Storage, Virtualization (Desktop or Datacenter), E-mail Administration, etc) the chances of a decent paying job and the benefits of things like relocation improve dramatically.

Just be careful that if you're in a somewhat specialized job and something happens where you need to leave the company, there may not be another job in the area available and you'll need to move again.

Don't make any judgments as to red flags until you actually meet in person and have a chance to look at the office. Be sure to ask solid questions. Don't rush to judgement when you haven't even had the chance to meet in person.
When I interviewed for my current job I thought I totally blew the interview and I got hired.

He is not old. Merely crotchety...and mildly insane. Amazing he has not gotten himself killed by now. He is also absurd, intelligent, scatological and obscene. Often in the same sentence.

Was great fun when he moved to Las Vegas but he grew away from it.

Writes well though even if his messages could use a filter.

Oh jeez, here we go again!

Of course the weather is not perfect but does anyone especially think for one second that the weather is perfect in Seattle Like there isn't any correlation to the weather in Seattle and their high rates of depression and suicide.

Employment isn't great but to even back then state was between low and none is completely wrong. Now with that said we don't make terrific engineers or other professionals but a lot of other cities don't either. This town was built on hospitality and it will always be the #1 career choice.

The stuff with Metro is way off as well. I've known cops on both coasts are most are good but every department has bad seeds.

English non-speaking, happens everywhere. Was really big back in DC when I left 4 years ago.

Healthcare and schools-No issues. CCSD isn't great but my kids school is top notch, both of my kids are in second grade and are already doing third grade work. Classes are about 20-1 which is good. With that said there are some schools here are terrible but a lot of what happens falls on lack of parent involvement not because of bad teachers. Hospitals are fantastic here, my kids and 81-year old
mother have received top-notch treatment.

I'll leave it at that. It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on Seattle after 2 years, I'm willing to bet that life isn't so grand there either.

300 miles I think. Hawthorne NV is most of the way to Reno. So northern not southern NV

It is actually a pretty nice little town and you would live there. A big US Army Ordnance dump and facility which provides jobs.

Nice small town place to raise kids if that is where you are going.
