Hi, I came to Vegas 2 month ago. I have good career and very good experiences in previous state, so I thought (and my friends said) I could get a job easily in Vegas even though Vegas is highest unemployment city in the USA. I have applied many big hotels on strip area, but I have only got 1 interview and I met managers and employees, they were all very young people like around 20yrs old or may be max was 25-7... I'm 47 years old. The interview didn't go well. I lately heard and read that most of companies (not only big hotels) in Vegas don't hire over 40yrs old or 45yrs old even though we have great career. I just don't understand this "age discrimination". I never had problem in the city I lived before. Is Vegas not for over 40yrs single ladies(or even gentlemen) that need jobs? Is city quietly saying that you are too old to get job in Vegas, so go away!! go different place? If so, this is not fair at all. Does anybody know about this "age discrimination" behind the companies?

What type of work? Cocktails would be hard, but engineers easier.

Really, the best way to get a job is through networking. Have you met anyone in the industry yet?

I agree....If the job requires looks to be important it will be downright impossible for 47 year old to get a job in the casinos. However, there are many other types of jobs she will qualify for.

I was not insinuating that you are not attractive enough. I just know how casinos work as in they want the younger crowd.

I didn't think that you were insinuating me at all. but thank you so much for saying it. my point is... I heard that almost all hotels HR just check applicants age (graduated high school age, or college age) first and if HR assume that applicants are over 40yrs of age, they don't even look education and work experiences, is not fair at all. I undersand that they want younger faces. I was working on south beach in miami for 10yrs, so I really understand, but even though south beach hotels give applicants interviews at least.

Older (more experience) employees expect more pay and benefits. The younger 20's just starting out will accept less not knowing there is more to ask for or apply for. You may be selling yourself short at the level you are applying for. See if there are any mid level management jobs which they want mature employees to help manage the younger ones. Please keep in mind many of the jobs the younger folks are applying for there are many more waiting to take their place and the hiring manager knows this especially in LV. From what I have read here knowing someone with pull helps in the casino industry.

It is so much harder to get a job here than most people realize. On Craigslist there was a add for miscellaneous yard work and the person who put the add on there said he got over 100 emails in one day of people wanting to come do the work, amazing how many people out there willing to do anything they can find. A few years ago a new In-N-Out opened here in Vegas, there were 5o jobs and over 1000 applied in 2 days. I'm not saying there are not any jobs but they are definitely harder to find than most people think, especialy if you don't know anyone.

was it a front line position? You english isn't the best, so maybe if you had direct customer interaction they didn't take you on that?

I would follow up and go see the spa manager. Just show up. If you try to make an appointment, they will probably brush you off. You increase your chance of staying in the forefront of their mind.
