I am considering a move to LV and am trying to get the lay of the land via Google Map. I was viewing some possible rental locations near UNLV when I noticed that McCarren International Airport appears to be right in the middle of the metro area. Those NE/SW runways look like they're pointed straight at the campus! Those E/W runways appear to run straight into S. Las Vegas Blvd! It's like three miles from Downtown!

I mention this because I once had the unpleasant experience of staying in Atlanta, GA for a week right next to Hartsfield-Jackson's runways. It was pure torture. If I'd had a SAM I'm sure I would have used it. Never again.

So does this mean that for people who value their sanity that the university district is not a good idea? How can anybody live there? How do students study there? Does everybody wear earplugs or what?

That's nothing.
You wanna hear planes?
Go to some parts of North Las Vegas where you can hear the sonic boom from the AIR FORCE jets!

Default Been There Done That

At one time I lived right next to Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque. I know the sound and hate it. Nothing on earth louder than a fighter jet. I was planning on staying well clear of Nellis. And then I noticed McCarren...

That's quite a video. Brings back the nightmares.

Thanks for the link. I see that this is already a hot topic. Useful info on where not to locate.

I am actually right under the flight path in my casino hotel that I have been living at for a week. Now the planes do fly right over like every 20 minutes or so. I think they are less frequent at night. I would say it surprisingly does not bother me that much and I am very sensitive to sound and noises. But I use a noise machine, so I think that drowns out alot of the sound.

But I agree with you, I could not believe they put the airport directly in the middle of the city. I was like what the hell also.

Obviously they were thinking that it would be convenient for the tourists to have the airport in proximity to the Strip.

Are those houses along the runway at Nellis?

Nah. The sonic booms occassionally come down the valley from the NW when conditions are right but nobody hears them near Nellis.

On very rare days you may have say a squadrons of A10s make a low pass over El Dorado but that is rare. Mostly the Nellis noise is over the Speedway.
