I had always assumed with this being the land of the free and whatnot, that a tourist could own a gun until I read this article. Bottom line is I think it depends on what type of visa you have, best consult a lawyer:

(More to this case of course with the guy having a criminal record but...)

"Malkoun was arrested last Sunday when he attended a gun show and purchased three weapons: a Smith and Wesson 9 millimetre pistol; a Sig Sauer .45 calibre pistol; and a Colt model Mustang Pocket Light .38 calibre pistol.

He was visiting the US on a 90-day tourist visa, which made it illegal for him to buy the guns"

I don't think the U.S. Constitution was meant to protect the rights of foreigners. But it does try to protect us from y'all.

I'll check with the DMV and a gun store. I know someone from Canada who has a winter home in Florida and carries a gun in her purse when she is there so I was wondering about the NV laws.

You would need to show NV I.D, ss card and three months utility bills to prove you are a resident. This is how I purchased all mine. To get a ss card however you will need either L or E type visa. You cannot get a CCW because you have to be a US citizen or GC holder. I might also be totally wrong if the laws have changed in the last five months!
