Hello,
I'm a newbie from Texas. I'm wondering if a local expert can chime in and brief me on Nevada gun laws. In Texas your house and car are 1. So, if there's someone breaking in my car I could shoot them legally. I know crime is almost everywhere in Las Vegas and need to know what I can and can't do for home and property defense. Sorry if I didn't get to specific, but I know it can be a touchy subject.
Thanks in advance

Welcome to Las Vegas!
What a first post
I would think unless they tried to kill you in the process, when the crook gets out of jail he'll sue you for attempted murder.
Not to worry though...you'll be in jail on a murder 2 charge.
I would think.

Lol, I know, not the ideal 1st post, I've been lurking for almost 3 years now. Just moved to Vegas 12/15/10 though. I understand the car break-in. What about home invasions? I don't think I have to worry about it since I'm at E Warms Springs and Eastern. So can I defend my family "in the house"?

Please do not shoot someone for breaking into your vehicle. They are putting you in no physical danger. Whether or not the law would allow you to do that in Texas is irrelevant. It is morally wrong.

I am a gun owner also.

Kind of depends on whether the bullet enters his front or back doesn't it? You can defend yourself ...you can't shoot a guy that's running away.

Unless you are in the car at the time.

Here's the specific Nevada statute that addresses the use of deadly force -
Quote:
NRS 200.120 “Justifiable homicide” defined. Justifiable homicide is the killing of a human being in necessary self-defense, or in defense of habitation, property or person, against one who manifestly intends, or endeavors, by violence or surprise, to commit a felony, or against any person or persons who manifestly intend and endeavor, in a violent, riotous, tumultuous or surreptitious manner, to enter the habitation of another for the purpose of assaulting or offering personal violence to any person dwelling or being therein.
[1911 C&P § 129; RL § 6394; NCL § 10076]—(NRS A 1983, 518)
Clearly, you're covered in the event of a home invasion. It would appear you're also covered in the defense of your car. As I'm sure you know, Texas is very pro-castle doctrine. I've read of justified shootings in Texas that might not have been given a pass in many other states. The above statute gives you a place to start your research.

In NV your car is considered your habitation when you are occupying it. Also you have no duty to retreat in your habitation in NV. However, unlike TX, in NV you would very likely not be exonerated for shooting thieves in the back as they ran away with your neighbors TV.
