Painted Desert is a nice community, a guy in our golfing group lives there and he likes it a lot. Lots of nice amenities and tight knit community, if you play golf then it's a treat as the course is one of the better ones in the NW.

Among other things, they only allowed two dogs, and at the time we had three, so we got our money back. Besides there were no block walls in back, and it was right on the golf course. Our dogs would have been barking at golfers all day long, so it was probably for the best. Nice development though.
That would have been OK Buzz. Just played there this past Saturday and there are a few holes where dogs bark, but overall it's pretty quiet. Only thing to worry about is wayward shots that hit the houses, we've been known on occasion to have a shot rattle off the roof.

Employment - i knew it would take awhile to settle in but it was longer than expected. it took 7 months to get a "real job". I've been at my real job for just over 4 months now and like it a lot.. i am actually being promoted in 2 weeks.. the increase in pay will help. Ive also learned that the M has some of the best perks out there.. for every holiday worked, i get a paid day off.. every 2 months that i am employed with the M, i get a day off paid... for every 6 months of perfect attendance, i get a paid day off.. so thats 16 days off paid within the 1st year... I also get a meal each day (most casinos do this). Get discounts throughout etc.. and the tips are good too...
Expenses - Except for automobile related, everything here is cheaper by far compared to Ohio.. i love how there is no state tax, local tax, regional tax, etc... plus the property tax is dirt cheap compared to Ohio.
The people - This is where it gets upsetting for me here.. I believe that the people of Vegas are VERY different than those of Ohio... Nobody gives a darn about you here.. And will lie to you while looking you in the eye... Even if you offer to help someone here they don't believe you. I still have my dealers license and am amazed how expensive a car here is... example (sorry Costa Rica guy) $8700 for a 2005 Hyundai Elantra is the biggest ripoff I've heard so far on an automobile... They are going for around $3500-$4000 all day long....You can get a 2009 for the same $8700.. Mechanics are hard to find.. but on a good note, thanks to this board, I've met Teach1234 who is a great mechanic and very very very fair.... Did i mention that he is very fair? Friends are very hard (if not impossible) to find here... This would be the only thing that would draw me back to Ohio...
The weather - I like it. Winter was different as i did not expect the winds.. This summer is warmer than last and feels to have a bit more humidity.
The entertainment, things to do... - Hands down, this blows away Ohio without question.
The law - Humorous to say the least. Wife got a speeding ticket a couple days ago, she thought i would be mad.. i just laughed.. It's only considered a parking ticket here....
Overall, a good experience. I'm 80% happy, 20% unhappy here.
You're right about Teach 1234. He's the only person I've met live and in living color from this forum (that I know of ─ my wife tells me we've seen Aqualung and his Iggies at the park but I didn't know it). But he fixed my car without ripping me off for things I didn't need. And I'll be seeing him again after our vacation for a tune up.

As an on and off resident of 20 years, I can relate to the 80/20 happiness ratio. Every place has its annoyances and Vegas is no different.

I have just posted an update about my plan to purchase a condo. I got great help and advice from Grofica and Mad Man. I am not purchasing a condo anymore, but I still love LV and hope to do some RE business in LV soon.

Well, our offer was accepted on the house in Painted Desert. We won't be moving in for a while, so I'll have plenty of time to get things just the way the wife wants. I've heard lots of good comments about the community and the location seems real nice for access to shopping and the freeway. Now I have to get busy arranging for the loan, appraisal, inspection, etc. This forum has proven very informative and I'd like to thank all the Las Vegans who have shared their insight with all of us uninformed. The wife seems real happy now as she hates the cold weather. I think her comment was - "There's finally light at the end of the tunnel". Or words to that effect. - Croce

I definitely agree with this. We moved away from Vegas for about a year to a small town in Washington State. It was beautiful and we thought we would like it there.

Wrong. My husband hated the small town mentality where you don't ever go anywhere in your career. I hated the winter. I thought I was going to die. 20 degree highs with 100 percent humidity, fog, and ice/snow storms. We were back in Vegas in a year. Vegas has it's weak spots, but on a whole the grass is not always greener on the other side. LOL, well literally the grass is, but not the happiness factor.

A further update on our exploits...

Spent from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the first full day here (Monday), apartment hunting. We looked in just about every area except North Vegas. Went a little above and a little below our price range of $800 to get comparisons. After looking at 18 complexes, including those kindly recommended by people on here, we landed in Southern Highlands. Coming from Boston, we liked the quite and more residential feel. Yet it's close enough to everything and there is a more than adequate shopping center right down the street. The "funny" thing for us is that this one bedroom apartment has more square feet than our two bedroom had in Boston.

Tuesday was taking care of all the paperwork (seemed like more of a process than buying a damn house), and moving in.

The entire day Wednesday went to getting insurance, our driver's licenses and registrations taken care of. Almost had a heart attack at the DMV when we found out how much the registration cost for our two cars!!! But then you don't have the yearly road tax like MA, so I guess it evens out. Still, we weren't quite prepared for that. Note to anyone doing the same from out of state - go to the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles web site and read the requirements for changing over your license and registration carefully before you go. You'll want to make sure to have all the necessary documents before you get there. The lines are long and you don't want to have to go through everything more than once. (Not that we had to but while waiting we heard enough.)

Now that we have a local address and are "official" we've can start the job hunt in earnest. Like many have said here before, unless you can prove you are local don't bother. You have to be here to even be considered.

To those that read this and thing we are crazy and or stupid to have made this move without jobs...1) we came knowing exactly what we are up against, 2) this is not the first time we have done this, 3) we have enough savings, 4) there was nothing for us in Boston to keep us there (jobs, employment opportunities, etc. which the same might be said for here but actually the odds are better just enough for us), 5) life is not for sissies.

Wife and I wont be moving until January, I posted about moving from Detroit. I have been looking at jobs and will start applying closer to when the time comes. Wife works in the adult industry so she is pretty set with that. The economy is SO bad here in Detroit that I don't think it could be any worse in Vegas. Either way we're both excited for change, my cousin grew up in Green Valley and I have friends near South Pointe Casino so I know a bit about the area.
