Cool Re: Take thier advice

Hi,

I moved here 16 years ago with my two younger children and let tell you if I could turn back the page I would, All they did was get into trouble and I came from a hard part of a city in NY. Do yourself a favor look some where else it is not a place to grow unless you have a lot of money to invest. Also gambling is very bad out here it's the worse thing to get unto.

My Children now are grown and gone and I am moving back to the east coast because it is getting terrible out here and it's sad because it could have been a great place and it's very hot!

Good Luck!

You can definetly make a living here, but you need a skill, an education... if you don't then you will be paid low. At 18 what skill can you offer the community to make yourself valuable?

Sorry to burst your bubble but you will have a hard time paying to live working at the mall unless you are in managment. And... it doesn't matter if you know Spanish. There are already so many people here that know Spanish that it's not like it's something here that is in high demand making it a valuable job. There are tons of hispanics here (legal and illegal) and they all speak Spanish and many can speak English. Don't count on that as being a shoe-in for a good job, it's not.

What you could do, if you plan to attend UNLV (where I graduated) is to live in campus in the dorm. Or... find a roommate to share an apartment with near the college. That will help you save on expenses while you go to school If you have a roommate situation you can afford to live with a job at the mall.

Chris,

Here's some info that I gained through experience. I lived there for 8 years ('96-'05). I was lucky to get in-state tuition for UNLV, but I still had some help from relatives. If you do go to UNLV, loans are a must, even though tuition is only $2.5k per year (plus roughly about $5k for out-of-state), plus books, materials, and parking. One thing you should consider though, is going to the community college of southern nevada (ccsn). They have much lower tuition, and if I could do college over, I'd probably go there first. Also lookup nevada state college. I don't know much about it, but I have a friend that works there.

During my freshman and sophomore years, I lived on my own with a roommates, in a VERY bad area (crack alley by Blvd mall for all the vegas folks) and worked retail for $8/hr, and I barely had enough to get by. Granted, I didn't take out loans at the time, but with rising tuition and parking, it may be a different story. Fill out a FAFSA to see if you qualify for any programs.

As someone previously mentioned, there aren't many opportunities for an 18-20 year old, but look for bussing jobs at local, or off-strip restaurants. Network yourself with the Valet folks, get a Valet job, and pull in some decent money. Also, try looking at costco, I hear they make good money for not having a degree. In four years you can pull off $40k, much better than working at the casinos.

It's doable, but you have to be smart about it. Time and money management were the biggest issues I had as an 18 year old. Sure you have freedom and such, but you really work for it.

I made it, and so can you, if you're willing to be dedicated. Hope this helps!

You will do fine. Might even find a job before you get here. If not you are well inside the "chosen few" professions that can't lose in this town.

Standard rules...;If you move to Vegas without enough money to last 3 months be prepared to hustle hard or go home with your head in your hands. We do not suffer fools.

Other than that you should do fine. We love machines here...and those who care for them are in at least the lower levels of the priesthood.
