Default depot

Heres one for you geniuses out there.

There is a house at 829 E College that looks suspiciously like it was once a small railroad depot. Does anyone know if that is the case? My information is that the streetcar once ran out that far, but I can't believe they would have had a depot of this size, especially there. 'Tis a puzzlement!

You done woke me up!

None of the maps in my collection show a RR along that section. The nearest one was the short-lived streetcar line that ran up Liberty to College then east continuing east on TC Lea, terminating just east of Kiger. It only ran a few years.

Perhaps the house in question was at one time an automotive service station. In days of old US 24 Highway ran on College. I envision gas pumps street-side with service bays on the lower level entered from Frederick.

I know it wasn't railroad, unless it was moved there from farther away. Yes, the streetcar tracks went that far but I couldn't imagine a need for a depot. I never thought about a service station......hmmmm.......

Way back in The Golden Year 1961 this structure housed the residence and business of David Childers Furnace & Sheet Metal Co.

In 1948 829 was a private residence of a different name In 1930 and 1938 there was nothing as the 800 block did not exist

Going forward, by 1972 it had reverted to a private residence.

Thanks MRG! I do now remember the furnace business being there. The rest may have been just an architectural choice at the time.

Happy Thanksgiving!

To be more precise that address didn't exist IN Independence until 1948, when that area was annexed. The older directories usually omitted addresses outside the city limits.

Unless College was the boundary line There were addresses in the 700 block in all years aforementioned as I recall In 1930 the 700s emptied into "Strode begins" Then Strode lists only the E. 900 block. I didn't see Strode in that area on the map, but further east it looks like it extends for some ways east

I think Strode was the city limit for many years. It is a short N-S street which runs north off College at the end of the 700 block. College continues and curves to the north. The house/building in question is in the N-S section of College, which is still addressed as East.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL.
