That is a tough one! Rost was there in the 1950s, but I don't know how much earlier or if they were the first dealership in that building. City directories are a good option for learning more, but this location is tricky. Fairmount was not annexed into Independence until 1960. Before that Polk's directories included it in the KC edition for some years, other years in Independence, sometimes not at all. I don't know which years it was in which edition. If you are local the easiest way to research it would be a trip to the Midwest Genealogy Center, where they have these directories for most years.

I think I ARE how I ARE on account'a I grew up in the midst of history. That gave me a natural love for history, especially local. Retirement gave me the time to immerse myself even more.

Your question has taught me a thing or two! First off, Rost was not the first Chevrolet dealer at that location. He wasn't the second one either.

The earliest I found a dealer there was 1924. It was the Brown-McKenzie Motor Co.

In 1925 a fire at that location affected the Claude P Brown Motor Car Company. His ad listed a full-line of new Fords along with used cars of many makes.

Before 1933 it had become Inter-City Chevrolet, because in October of that year Howard Chevrolet ran ads announcing they had taken over. The history after that (dates are approximate based on newspaper ads):

1933 -1947 Howard Chevrolet
1947- 1968 Rost Chevrolet
1968- 1974 Browning Chevrolet
1974- 1988 Dahmer Chevrolet

In 1988 Dahmer bought controlling interest in Gene Cable Chevrolet from Gene and merged the two dealerships. The Fairmount location was then closed in favor of the newer, nicer Noland Road location.

I don't pay much attention to local car dealers. I've never bought a vehicle from any of them.
